Per ESPN, they actually include 101 coaches on the list, although they call it the top 100. Here's the top 10.

4. Tom Osborne

9. Barry Switzer
10. LaVell Edwards

Joe Paterno was #11. Other notables, Steve Spurrier was #13, Pete Carroll #14, Woody Hayes #16, Darrell Royal #18, Lou Holtz #19, Jimmy Johnson #25. An interesting note: Mark Richt ranks #35, while two better regarded Georgia coaches come in lower, Vince Dooley at #44 and Kirby Smart at #93 (probably because he hasn't been around that long).

Interestingly, Tom Osborne has an undefeated record against Nick Saban, 2-0.

He split with Bear Bryant, 1-1.

Dadgummit, he did not fair as well with Bobby Bowden -- 2-6.


Osborne also has the 2nd highest winning percentage (1st among those coaches with 200 wins). He did that while recruiting players to "flyover country".


If you believe that a coach's job is to do more than just win games, I would add that Nebraska (by far) had the greatest number of Academic All-American players during his tenure. Those are the results that one expects when your head coach as a PhD in Educational Psychology.

Obviously, I have a favorite, and I am just glad that quiet ol' Dr. Tom was not overlooked.

Other than Switzer being WAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY too low, I can't really argue with this list.
