Revered Classics scholar.
My first real exposure to ancient history was in the mid 90's when I read his history of the Peloponnesian War.

In 1976, as a math grad student, I sat in on Prof. Kagan's Introduction to Ancient Greek History. He made the classical world come to life. I traveled to Greece that summer and had a much deeper understanding of the monuments that I visited. RIP.

My condolences.
As a math major, you would have known the Greek alphabet already.
