The Cleveland Indians have become the Cleveland Guardians

Known as the Indians since 1915, Cleveland's Major League Baseball team will next be called the Guardians.

The ballclub announced the name change Friday with a video on Twitter narrated by actor Tom Hanks, ending months of internal discussions triggered by a national reckoning by institutions and teams to permanently drop logos and names considered racist.

And only play songs from Quill's mom's mix tape as walk up music.

I'll pick this nit. Since the name change won't take effect until the end of the season, I think a more accurate headline will say that the Indians "will become" the Guardians. --Bob

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has basically said the same thing.

Some other entity has already copywritten (or whatever) the name

That'd be a trademark. What name are you writing about?

A roller derby team in Cleveland filed a trademark application for "Cleveland Guardians" a few days after the Indians made their announcement. The roller derby team has been in existence since 2014 and has their own website and plays games outside the state of Ohio and has a social media presence.

Bob ###s is the resident expert on trademark law and can comment on this, but it seems to me as if the Indian/Guardians should have done a better job of searching before they made their announcement.

Yep!

When I worked in Boise, my employer paid a considerable amount of money to a company to come up with two of those high-tech-sounding names for our two divisions. When I saw them, I immediately noticed that one was the same as another software company. When I searched for the other (pre-Google) I found another software company with a very similar name. The owner abandoned his quest.

They should have named them the Cleveland Engines.

Area of use matters too. There used to be two teams known as the St. Louis Cardinals and two teams known as the New York Giants. My understanding is that the NFL team still answers its phone, “New York football Giants.” —Bob

They should have renamed themselves the Cleveland Steamers (and I don't mean a train).
