I just figured out something that could change a lot about the final solution, without changing much of what has been done so far.

I initially threw out Melly's guess of NANA for Zola, thinking that slam was a much better fit for Martina Navratilova. But now it occurs to me that Hoyle could be a fit for slam, given his background with bridge, CARD could go with Helen Steiner Rice, and NANA for Zola.

My apologies, Melly.

I wasn't sure about Nana and Zola off the bat, either, Mr. K.

Frank used the word "card" in Rice's clue, and I don't think he would have phrased the clue that way if "Card" was the matching word.

I'm pretty sure you're right. We already matched TORA with Yamamoto, so matching TORO with Manolete is the same principle. And if my guesses about Helen Steiner Rice matching with Muybridge and Oscar de la Renta with Hoyle are right, that finishes the puzzle.
