49 years ago today

#1 Post by earendel » Thu Jul 08, 2021 2:59 pm

Another turn of the Earth's orbit around the sun, and it's mine and elwing's 49th wedding anniversary. I find myself wondering how we got so old, but notwithstanding that, we are as in love today as we were all those years ago. Perhaps Browning said it best:

Grow old with me
the best is yet to be,
the last of life, for which the first was made.

And they said it wouldn't last.

Mrs. SSS has been married for 54 years now. Of course, that's to two different men.

Congratulations, Steve. Here's hoping Wendy and I make it another 17 years, and you and elwing another 49. :)

Yes. It's a sobering thought to realize that I've been married longer than any of my co-workers have been alive (my supervisor is only 37, which is the same number of years I've been working for the Corps in the same job).

For our anniversary elwing and I went back to Oklahoma to visit high school friends. On the way we stopped in Eureka Springs, AR, where we spent our honeymoon. The motel where we stayed was still there, so we stayed there again. When checking in, elwing mentioned that we had stayed there 49 years ago, and the desk clerk told her that the motel had opened 49 years ago. It turns out that we stayed there the first week it was open.

We planned on leaving on Saturday, July 3, but our sons told us that they were planning a cookout to celebrate our anniversary on Sunday, the 4th. This was somewhat surprising considering that they hadn't done anything particular to mark previous anniversaries; elwing believed it was the idea of the newest member of the family, our daughter-in-law. So we went and had a good time. At the end of the evening we were invited to DIL's living room where our sons had prepared a Jeopardy!-style trivia game, asking questions such as "What was the color of your first car?" and "What was the address of the first place you lived after getting married?" As each question was removed from a posterboard, the words "Happy Anniversary" were revealed. Then came the big surprise - they had planned, and paid for, a trip to Hawai'i for us to celebrate our 50th anniversary next year! elwing and I had talked about making that trip on several occasions - our 50th state on our 50th anniversary, but never expected this. What's more, the trip was for the whole family - all thirteen of us (sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren). We'll be going the last week in February and staying on Oahu for seven days.
