Clark's father, Tom Clark, was a justice on the Supreme Court who resigned after Ramsey's appointment as AG and was replaced by Thurgood Marshall. If Tom had stayed on the Court, he would have had to recuse himself in every case involving the U.S. (or any government agency) as a party. A lot of people believe that LBJ appointed Ramsey as AG specifically to create the vacancy on the Court that he could fill.
