NFL Approves 17th Game for 2021

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Tue Mar 30, 2021 7:16 pm

In 2021 and beyond, NFL teams will play a 17-game schedule. The extra game will be an interconference game featuring a team from the other conference that finished in the same position in the division. So, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Green Bay Packers, while the other AFC West teams will host the other NFC North teams. This year, the AFC teams will have the ninth home game, and next year the NFC will have that ninth home game. The preseason will be reduced from four games to three, and each team will still have only one bye week.

I wish they would reduce the preseason games to two, or one, or zero.

Unfortunately, preseason tickets are part of season ticket packages, so people pay for ten game packages (I'm sure this year's preseason schedule will be adjusted accordingly so that teams still have ten home games overall). The owners sell those seats even though few people show up for the preseason games. Back before 1978, teams played 14 regular season and six preseason games. A lot of those preseason games were played in non-NFL cities.
