Lyrically Speaking - 2/12/21

Way back in early January, I thought I would hate myself for tacking an extra week on to this year's LSWE, given how I've struggled in past years to have games ready before the morning they were to be posted. But that really wasn't much of an issue this year at all! But now that I've evened out the odd year that was the inaugural LSWE, making this my 450th contribution to this Bored institution, I'll definitely be keeping the contest to multiples of 25 in the future. And don't expect a classic 50 game contest anytime soon!

So, here's the final installment of Player Choice Fridays, where I asked you to submit a favorite and least favorite song. Not only did you all manage to pick songs I haven't used yet this year.... but there's only one repeat artist in this game to boot! This is going to be a whopper of a point game too.... not just because there's 26 songs, but I want you to tell me whether each song was submitted as a favorite or least favorite for an extra point each! And if you think that's going to be obvious..... well, I'll warn you it's not! I was surprised by some of these choices.... but hey, everyone thinks my faves and unfaves stink too! And of course, I did add my own for each side of the coin.... and to get the full 5 points each for identifying them, you have to know whether they were my favorite or least favorite!

Before I give the lowdown on the points for this game, I'd like to thank everyone for playing this year! It was a small, but very loyal group who never ceased to surprise and entertain me this year! I look forward to doing this again in January 2022...

Alrighty then....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for identifying whether each song was a fave or not fave, 5 points each for identifying the fave and not fave songs I added to this game....

1. You could have a big dipper
Going up and down
All around the bends

2. Living easy, loving free
Season ticket on a one way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride

3. Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak.

4. So please believe me
My heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you

5. And if I can't hold you in my arms
It just wouldn't be fair

6. Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Paying anything to roll the dice just one more time

7. The others were untrue
But when it came to loving you
I'd spend my whole life with you

8. Watching, I keep waiting
Still anticipating love
Never hesitating
To become the fated ones

9. Oh but, just now, you said
You literally couldn't get out of bed
That really makes me want to literally
Smack a crowbar upside your stupid head

10. Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk

11. I have always thought
That it's a crime
So I will ask you once again

12. Unsealed, on a porch
A letter sat
Then you said
I wanna leave it again

13. Toora loora toora loo rye aye
And we can sing just
Like our fathers

14. Went to a party the other night
All the ladies were treating me right
Moving my feet to the disco beat
How in the world could I keep my seat

15. Hail (Hail), what's the matter with your head, yeah
Hail (Hail), what's the matter with your mind and your sign

16. I put gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
Acting up, drink in my cup
I could care less what you think

17. Did you ever really need somebody
And really need 'em bad
Did you ever really want somebody
The best love you ever had

18. Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, ayy ayy
But everything gon' be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, ayy

19. Action speaks louder than words
And I'm a man of great experience
I know you've got another man
But I can love you better than him

20. I do believe in you
And I know you believe in me
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah

21. Oh, sugar, where've you been
Hangin' out with your male friends
Listen, somebody's gonna hurt you
The way you love to keep hurtin' me

22. Dixie, when I let you go
Thought you'd realize
That I would know, I would show

23. You, you talk about just every band
But the names you drop are second hand
I`ve heard it all before

24. Well, another crazy day
You drink the night away
And forget about everything

25. Now, here I go again I see the crystal vision
I keep my visions to myself

26. There ain't no danger we can go too far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Which song did I submit as a favorite?

26. GREASE

Which song did I submit as a least favorite?

1. SLEDGEHAMMER. I'm pretty sure that you don't like In Your Eyes but really like Big Time. Unfortunately I don't remember your feelings on Sledgehammer. Gonna take a shot and gamble that your choices bookend this quiz.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that's just...... meh.

Old Time Rock and Roll-Bob Seger. I don't hate it, but I've always found it rather simple, bland, pedestrian, if you will. It's also overplayed and wildly popular, and if you attend a wedding or some cocktail lounge, and there's a band or musician that's very middle-of-the-road, and they announce "we got a request to play some rock 'n roll", rest assured that you're gonna hear either Proud Mary or Old Time R 'n R..

Image Bonus: Uh oh! It looks like I've strip mined the JJC point supply after thirteen years! What am I going to have to give out in next year's LSWE as extra rewards?

Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel - Unfave (This was one of my favorite songs when it came out, and I still love it... so I'll have to respectfully disagree)

2. Living easy, loving free
Season ticket on a one way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Highway To Hell - AC/DC - Unfave (AC/DC certainly has their sound... and if you don't like it, you're probably not going to like any of their songs. Outside of Big Balls [of course], I'm not much of a fan of Bon Scott era AC/DC at all...)

3. Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak.
Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You - Frankie Valli - Fave (Eh, I could've Kroxed this one for being meh...)

4. So please believe me
My heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you
Babe - Styx - Unfave (Completely agree. And while I like Dennis DeYoung's vision of Styx, he did some real dreck like this and "Come Sail Away"...)

5. And if I can't hold you in my arms
It just wouldn't be fair
Precious And Few - Climax - Fave (I was surprised how many pinned this as a fave. I'm OK with it, but it seems like the kind of sap most people would hate...)

6. Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Paying anything to roll the dice just one more time
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey - Unfave

7. The others were untrue
But when it came to loving you
I'd spend my whole life with you
You've Made Me So Very Happy - Blood Sweat and Tears - Fave (Really can't go wrong with BST thanks to the voice of David Clayton Thomas...)

8. Watching, I keep waiting
Still anticipating love
Never hesitating
To become the fated ones
Take My Breath Away - Berlin - Unfave (Wholeheartedly agree.... this fucking sucked)

9. Oh but, just now, you said
You literally couldn't get out of bed
That really makes me want to literally
Smack a crowbar upside your stupid head
Word Crimes - Weird Al Yankovic - Fave (This may very well be Weird Al's masterpiece, which should tell you which side of the coin I'm on here...)

10. Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
99 Luftballoons - Nena - Unfave (I don't mind the song, but it was a bigger deal than it should have been at the time.... especially since the English version was heard most often on the radio and MTV)

11. I have always thought
That it's a crime
So I will ask you once again
We Can Work It Out - Beatles - Unfave (This is meh for the Beatles to me. I don't have much of an issue with any of their more popular songs that got on the radio. But their deeper album cuts are another story....)

12. Unsealed, on a porch
A letter sat
Then you said
I wanna leave it again
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam - Unfave (I'm completely unaware of this song, though every Pearl Jam song I know outside of "Jeremy" and "Evenflow" is pretty bad...)

13. Toora loora toora loo rye aye
And we can sing just
Like our fathers
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Unfave (The song isn't bad, but my god, it's played to fucking death...)

14. Went to a party the other night
All the ladies were treating me right
Moving my feet to the disco beat
How in the world could I keep my seat
Disco Duck - Rick Dees - Unfave (I love disco, but it got pretty corny for a while. I still like this, though...)

15. Hail (Hail), what's the matter with your head, yeah
Hail (Hail), what's the matter with your mind and your sign
Come And Get Your Love - Redbone - Fave (I can't imagine someone not liking this song...)

16. I put gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
Acting up, drink in my cup
I could care less what you think
Single Ladies (Put A Parenthetical On it) - Beyonce - Unfave (The long, LONG era of this getting overplayed has finally come to pass..... and this still sucks.)

17. Did you ever really need somebody
And really need 'em bad
Did you ever really want somebody
The best love you ever had
Ten Years Gone - Led Zeppelin - Fave (I have no idea if I know this song or not... there's so many LZ songs I've heard, but have no clue what the title is because the boys named them while higher than a kite...)

18. Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, ayy ayy
But everything gon' be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, ayy
Memories - Maroon 5 - Fave (Don't know this one either... but I like most M5. Even Moves Like Jagger.... yes, I admitted it)

19. Action speaks louder than words
And I'm a man of great experience
I know you've got another man
But I can love you better than him
Hard To Handle - Black Crowes - Fave (Another "cover and own" song... this will always be a Black Crowes song)

20. I do believe in you
And I know you believe in me
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah
Feelin' Stronger Every Day - Chicago - Fave (Chicago probably has more sappy shit that I like than any other band or artist ever....)

21. Oh, sugar, where've you been
Hangin' out with your male friends
Listen, somebody's gonna hurt you
The way you love to keep hurtin' me
Oh Sheila - Ready For The World - Unfave (So many obscure R&B bands getting that one 80's hit in the middle part of the decade. I like this...)

22. Dixie, when I let you go
Thought you'd realize
That I would know, I would show
Baby Blue - Badfinger - Fave (Of the four big Badfinger songs, this would rank #4 for me. But they're all good...)

23. You, you talk about just every band
But the names you drop are second hand
I`ve heard it all before
Fox on the Run - Sweet - Fave

24. Well, another crazy day
You drink the night away
And forget about everything
Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty - Fave (The iconic sax solo is the main reason I can't stand this song. But if you pay attention to everyone's LSWE answers, you should know who submitted this one, and that it was a fave...)

25. Now, here I go again I see the crystal vision
I keep my visions to myself
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac - Fave (Ditto above, everything but the sax solo. Like most Stevie Nicks FM songs, I don't care for this at all...)

26. There ain't no danger we can go too far
We start believing now that we can be who we are
Grease - Frankie Valli - Unfave (I've always liked it, and it's a Mecca earworm. For a time in 2019, I didn't consider the night complete until I heard this played... usually between 1 and 4 AM.)

Which song did I submit as a favorite?

#23 - Fox on the Run --- Words fail to describe the awesomeness of this song. And I completely agree with Weasel about anyone who would list this as an unfave...

Which song did I submit as a least favorite?

#6 - Don't Stop Believin' --- Journey is so overrated, and this song.... THIS SONG has to be the one everyone wants to play. I absolutely fucking hate it! And I love that almost everyone pegged this as an unfave too!

Image Bonus: Uh oh! It looks like I've strip mined the JJC point supply after thirteen years! What am I going to have to give out in next year's LSWE as extra rewards?

I always love the last IB of the year because I try to make it very open-ended... and you guys come up with some great stuff! This year was no exception. The final IBB of 2021 goes to Panic, because giving out the border around the stars was just fucking hilarious! And I think it's a better reward than the stars are...

The Border Around The Stars Points:

frank gets a supermax for the uncalled for comments about my beloved disco, and for once again recycling the best subject for the final Image Bonus...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for the Fucktopus (Which I'll definitely save if Anon and Esto play next year...)

Weasel gets a supermax for his comments on 23, Pound Town, and the familiar parade of gratitude...

I'm curious which songs folks chose for their fave and unfave selections. I'll share:

Unfave: Come on, Eileen. I was living and working in NE Alberta in the mid-80s and this song continued to be popular on MTV and on the radio (it was released in 1982). My roommate had the album, Too-Rye-Ay, and played it ALL THE TIME! If you think the song is annoying, the album is even worse. The lead singer is awful and their "sound" just doesn't cut it for me (in spite of solid album ratings). Plus, LB is right. The song is way overplayed even to this day. Go on, Eileen.

Fave: Can't Take My Eyes Off You. I've always liked this song, but it grew in appreciation after I saw Jersey Boys in Providence. After the band's internal troubles, Bob Gaudio writes a song for Frankie to start his solo career. The scene in the play is incredible with the slow start, then the horns blaring in. Frankie nailed it and off he went. The similar scene in the movie is equally good (although the movie is far less impactful than the play). I'll always sing along with this one, even though I have an old man's voice these days.

Anyone else care to share?

I'll play

Fave - Word Crimes - The tune is so very catchy but the original song has such creepy lyrics. Weird Al makes the song 100% better with the lyrics. I really don't think Weird Al gets the credit he deserves. He has an amazing vocal range, he raps better than many rappers, and his band can play ANY style of song. Oh and he has been doing it for 40 years.

Unfave- Disco Duck - Whenever I think of a bad song this is it. Bad lyrics, bad singing, Bad music (Disco already has 2 strikes in my book), and there is a duck. Oh and it is suppose to be funny?!?!?!? There is nothing to like here.

I'm happy to play, especially since LB agreed with me so emphatically, if a bit profanely, about Take My Breath Away. When I heard the Jessica Simpson version, I E-mailed RadioDude and told him if they ever played the song on their airwaves again, I would switch permanently to the country station. And they never did.

As for Baker Street, the saxophone solo is the main reason it's one of my favorites, so LB is wrong about that.

As for not thanking him, what makes him so sure I FORGOT?

Thanks, LB. Great games.

Fave - You've Made Me So Very Happy - Kind of special for me - I sang it to my wife at our wedding.

Nonfave - Oh Shiela - When this came out, it just sounded like nails on a chalkboard, especially the hyperventilating ( there was a trend in the 80's of singers hyperventilating. I haven't heard this song in years and I feel that I am better for it.

Fave -- Hard to Handle -- Black Crowes. As I told lb, his discussion of Simon and Garfunkel the other day got me thinking about it. I really, REALLY like this remake, and the Otis Redding original is just okay in my book.

Unfave -- Yellow Ledbetter -- Pearl Jam. Sorry for a relatively obscure song, but it gets used a lot in my local pub trivia, because the name of both song and band lend themselves well to themed sound rounds. I never understood the appeal of Pearl Jam. Jeremy is barely tolerable, and Last Kiss sounds like a bad bar band trying to be edgy with their remake. The rest of their catalog I can't distinguish from each other.

FAVE-Feelin' Stronger Everyday-Chicago.

A Top Ten entry on my All-Time Boneys list. Starting off as a pleasant midtempo number, it picks up that tempo and starts chugging away like a runaway train, picking up kickass horns, background vocals, which lead into the knockout blow of the last section with a cheeky "Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a gag, gas, gas", and the finishing touch, drummer Danny Seraphine riding the bell of his symbol. This is the definition of a feel good tune for me.

NOT FAVE-Single Ladies-Beyonce.

Rather than putting a ring on it, I would prefer to put a gag order on it. This assault on my eardums was inescapable during its looooonnnggg run, made all the worse because once you heard it, you could not remove it from your brain. Uh-uh-oh, indeed. This song made me want to do a Van Gogh on BOTH of my ears every time I heard it.
