RIP Walter Bernstein

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:18 pm

Blacklisted screenwriter whose story was part of the inspiration for the Woody Allen comedy, The Front. Bernstein received his only Oscar nomination for that screenplay, but he also wrote the scripts for Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough, and The Molly Maguires. He also worked (uncredited) on the scripts for The Magnificent Seven and The Train.

Age 101.

Interesting sidenote - The Molly Maguires was filmed on location at a little coal mining town in Pennsylvania named Eckley. They took the existing town which still looked like it was in the 19th Century and made it even more so. When filming ended, the town was sold to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where it still stands today as a museum village dedicated to the company-owned "patch towns" of the anthracite mining region. I worked there as Curator of Education for ten years.
