Inappropriate songs...but you love them, anyway.

#1 Post by Vandal » Thu Jan 14, 2021 8:46 pm

I saw a similar thread on another multi-topic board I frequent. Tell us about the songs you loved in the past that could not, should not, would not be acceptable in today's society for various reasons.

I'll start with Young Girl, by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. We had this on 45 back in the late 60s and played it to death. If you listen to it now, it may creep you out with its "older man, younger girl (too young)" references.

Pretty much any song that mentions young girls in the title, like You're Sixteen by Ringo, I Saw Her Standing There (she was just seventeen), Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen.

Yikes. Tell us your cringe-y song from the past.

Nothing can quite touch Money For Nothing in this category. That song was insanely popular when it came out, and MTV built its image around the video.

And now...... good luck hearing a version that doesn't completely obliterate the second verse.

As a kid in the 80's, I can vouch for the fact that dreaded word that gets said three times was probably the most popular playground insult of the era....

How about Some Girls title track: Black girls just want get f***d all night.

Mick and Keith contribute a lot to this subject matter:
Under My Thumb
Stray Cat Blues (I can see that you're just fifteen years old, but I don't want your ID)
Brown Sugar

I still love all these songs in spite of their content. That's rock and roll.

My Ding-a-Ling is a bit too obvious.

Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen by Neil Sedaka

The classic Baby, It's Cold Outside

And then there are plenty of songs that cater to ethnic or racial stereotypes. Ahab the Arab immediately comes to mind.

I remember "Take a letter Maria" where the singer dictates a letter to his wife that he's leaving her, then hits on his secretary. Don't think that would go over well these days.

Oh, and Vandal you have a PM from me. Thanks!

For me it's Every Picture Tells a Story. That song was the song playing at a very special point in my life (if you know what I mean   )

Anyway, I have it on my "Walking" playlist as it is upbeat and peppy. However, there are several lines that are no longer appropriate for today's audiences. Several lyrics might be considered misogynistic but it's references to an Asian woman are

Another song on my walking playlist is Treat Her Like a Lady. Also wouldn't pass the modern woman's approval.

In the Flesh, Part II by Pink Floyd (from The Wall) has not aged particularly well:

Are there any queers in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall
(Against the wall)
Now there's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me
Get him up against the wall
(Against the—)
And that one looks Jewish and that one's a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint and another with spots
If I had my way, I'd have all of ya shot!

Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Teacher hit me with a ruler,
Met her at the door with a Colt 44
and that was the end of her!

I know, I know. But still.

I don't agree. The character singing this is suppose to be Nazi and I think the point was how offensive it would be.

There's a whole list of underage girl songs. In addition to the ones mentioned:

Sweet Little 16 - Chuck Berry
Young Girl - Gary Puckett
Sexy & 17 - Stray Cats
16 Candles - Can't remember the artist

You can also switch it around and say
I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett ("I knew he musta been about 17")

And in a different direction
He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss) - The Crystals
You live and learn. Or at least you live. - Douglas Adams

One song that always gave me a bad vibe was Rosemary Clooney's "Come On-a My House." Came across as a "strangers with candy" thing.

Obtuse trivia about the song -- it was co-written by a pair of Armenian cousins, William Saroyan (the Pulitzer-winning author) and Ross Bagdasarian.

Bagdasarian you know better by his stage name -- Dave Seville (as in "Dave Seville and The Chipmunks").

Vehicle by The Ides of March

Hey well
I'm a friendly stranger in the black Sedan
Won't you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, got candy
I'm a lovable man
And I can take you to the nearest star

The point is, Pink Floyd got away with this in 1979 (and it worked - great song). No way could this song be released as new in LGBTQ-friendly 2021.

I loved Bad Moon Rising. Still do, I guess.

But all that death and destruction does make me cringe a bit, especially "one eye is taken for an eye."

There are several Randy Newman songs that are inappropriate, Sail Away, Rednecks, Political Science, and of course Short People.

Hey Joe fits the subject matter:

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Alright. I'm goin down to shoot my old lady,
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady,
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
And that ain't too cool.

I hated these the first time, and they don't get any better with time:

The Police, "Every Breath You Take" -- even at 16 I knew this was about a stalker
anyone who covered it, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" - you can't give consent if you are drunk.

Exceptions: Kurt and Blaine singing it on Glee, because it was forever before they had sex, and also John Lithgow and Bebe Neuwirth, because they are both in on the joke, and also because she sings circles around him - he is kind of the straight man feeding her lines in this version.
