Lyrically Speaking - 1/13/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Jan 13, 2021 8:00 am

Each of the following songs below mentions the name of an actor or actress somewhere in the lyrics. You get a bonus point for listing each name-dropped actor. Please note that a couple of these songs mention multiple famous people, including a few who did some acting, but their work in front of the camera isn't what they're best known for. I want the actor!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for the actor or actress mentioned in each song...

1. This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

2. They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

3. Stop
Wait a minute
Fill my cup put some liquor in it

4. I stumble into town
Just like a sacred cow
Visions of swastikas in my head

5. You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in

6. Different types
Who wear a daycoat
Pants with stripes
And cutaway coat
Perfect fits

7. Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down
In my blue suede shoes

8. She still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile
And all her friends tell her she`s so pretty
But she`d be a whole lot prettier
If she smiled once in a while

9. He tells me in his bedroom voice
Come on honey, let's go make some noise

10. Cuddle up, baby, move in tight
We'll go dancing tomorrow night
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can dance, well stay home instead

11. You say Rolls, I say Royce
You say God, give me a choice
You say Lord, I say Christ
I don`t believe in Peter Pan
Frankenstein or Superman

12. How can I save my little boy
From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist whose lyrics mention an actor or actress (preferrably only one), and name that thespian for 3 total points.

Well, if we want to keep it to one actor, that eliminate The Year of the Cat (Bogart and Lorre), Key Largo (Bogie and Bacall), Werewolves of London (Chaney Jr and Sr) ... and certainly Vogue. And Bette Davis Eyes would be cheating. So let's see:

No, I am not making any damned comments and that in itself should deserve JJCP because that's hard for me to do (or not do, as the case may be), but also because I sliced the shit out of the tip of my left index finger starting from underneath the nail and going diagonally across the entire tip. Do you know how hard it is to type without using your left index finger? But, wait, (you might say), aren't you left handed? How do you cut your left fingertip? Uh...because I was reaching for a big ass chef's knife without looking and it was under a towel and I rammed my finger right into the blade and slid? There! Lots of Oh You Poor Brave Thing and Still Playing LSWE points for me!!!1

1. This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head - Yul Brynner

Good thing you emphasized using the actor or I probably would've answered Somerset Maugham just to be a smartass. And we all know what they say about smartasses, right? (Hint: It's a Dadism!)

2. They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

Candle in the Wind - Elton John - Marilyn Monroe

3. Stop
Wait a minute
Fill my cup put some liquor in it

Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson f/Bruno Mars - Michelle Pfeiffer

You know how you have those streets that change names on either side of a larger street and there are two signs with arrows pointing which way is which? We have one where Oro Blanco turned to Platinum when you cross Austin Bluffs and I always wanted to take a picture of the sign because I believe it was unintentional (Platinum belongs the the "Metals and Gems" neighbourhood which is totally different from the Oro Blanco one. I was going past there a while back and noticed that they had taken down those directional signs. Moral of the story: When opportunity knocks, take the damned picture. No matter if it had been there for decades, nothing is forever. Except for Diamond Street (which is an actual street in the "G&M" neighbourhood. Ha!

4. I stumble into town
Just like a sacred cow
Visions of swastikas in my head

China Squirrel - David Bowie - Marlon Brando

Did I get my Annie Point for Punk Rock Squirrel the other day? I generally don't check the scores, but saw your remark about people not getting it.

5. You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in

That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain - Brad Pitt

She's got quite a few in there, but I see John Wayne coming up here in a bit...

6. Different types
Who wear a daycoat
Pants with stripes
And cutaway coat
Perfect fits

Puttin' On the Ritz - Clark Gable - Gary Cooper (my birthday buddy!)

Yes, I know that everybody is going to put Taco or Gene Wilder f/Peter Boyle or maybe even Fred Astaire, but I do believe it was Clark Gable that did it first in Idiot's Delight

7. Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down
In my blue suede shoes

Rock On - David Essex - James Dean

My finger hurts...

8. She still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile
And all her friends tell her she`s so pretty
But she`d be a whole lot prettier
If she smiled once in a while

Steve McQueen

Why Steve McQueen? I don't know, because it rhymes with James Dean?

9. He tells me in his bedroom voice
Come on honey, let's go make some noise

Manic Monday - Prince - Valentino

I'm assuming Rudolph, another birthday buddy (because Italians count different)

10. Cuddle up, baby, move in tight
We'll go dancing tomorrow night
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can dance, well stay home instead

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham - Doris Day

If I don't give an ! to Pink, I'm definitely not giving one to Wham...

11. You say Rolls, I say Royce
You say God, give me a choice
You say Lord, I say Christ
I don`t believe in Peter Pan
Frankenstein or Superman

Bicycle Race - Queen - John Wayne

Although technically Superman was an actor, right? He acted like he was Clark Kent! Speaking of, last night I tried to watch Justice League for like the third time and I still couldn't get through the whole thing. If Jason Momoa and Henry Cavill can't get to me stick around for the whole thing, that's the very definition of a crap movie...

12. How can I save my little boy
From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence

Dana Andrews

I would give an explanation as to why but, for some unknown reason, my finger really, really hurts. A lot.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist whose lyrics mention an actor or actress (preferrably only one), and name that thespian for 3 total points.

Only one? There goes that theory about picking Vogue and rackin up those thespian points...

Pencil Thin Moustache - Jimmy Buffett - Andy Devine

Ricky Ricardo is a bandleader, not an actor. As anyone who has ever watched I Love Lucy can attest..

Image Bonus: Who's ready for their closeup?

Image

Who the frick is Adam Devine and why is he taking over Andy Devine's image search??? Yeah, I could choose another krox to shamelessly try for the IBB (although I never get it when I'm actually trying to) but I love that song and I love The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and that's all there is to it.....

Did I mention that my finger hurts?

1. This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha
One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head - Yul Brynner (The Cal Ripken, Jr. of the LSWE. If you ever miss this song, you have nobody but yourself to blame...)

2. They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
Candle in the Wind - Elton John - Marilyn Monroe (The live version is what always gets played on the radio, and it's pretty blah. I love the studio version, though... making this a twin song to "I Want You To Want Me" in my mind)

3. Stop
Wait a minute
Fill my cup put some liquor in it
Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson with a tad bit of help from Bruno Mars - Michelle Pfeiffer (I actually read the full lyrics while I was getting a snippet for this game. Now I can stop thinking they're singing about being smoother than a fresh jawed hippie. Actually, no, that's burned into my head...)

4. I stumble into town
Just like a sacred cow
Visions of swastikas in my head
China Girl - David Bowie - Marlon Brando (Not preparing these games so far in advance like I used to means I don't force as many Annie Bonus songs into the game like I used to. And that may be why so many are getting missed...)

5. You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in
That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain - Brad Pitt (Also includes Elvis, who should've stuck to his day job...)

6. Different types
Who wear a daycoat
Pants with stripes
And cutaway coat
Perfect fits
Puttin' On The Ritz - Taco - Gary Cooper

7. Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down
In my blue suede shoes
Rock On - David Essex (and You Know Who) - James Dean

8. She still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile
And all her friends tell her she`s so pretty
But she`d be a whole lot prettier
If she smiled once in a while
Lullaby - Shawn Mullins - Dennis Hopper (Also mentions Cher, which was the main reason I stressed being primarily known for their acting. One of the few earworms from my first year at Mecca that I haven't come around to liking.... it's pure dreck)

9. He tells me in his bedroom voice
Come on honey, let's go make some noise
Manic Monday - Bangles - (Rudolf) Valentino (The image of Prince kissing Valentino is enough to make one call in sick from work...)

10. Cuddle up, baby, move in tight
We'll go dancing tomorrow night
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can dance, well stay home instead
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham!!!!!!!!!!! - Doris Day

11. You say Rolls, I say Royce
You say God, give me a choice
You say Lord, I say Christ
I don`t believe in Peter Pan
Frankenstein or Superman
Bicycle Race - Queen - John .... Wayne (I was desperately trying to come up with another John Wayne song since I knew there had to be one, and his name is split up in "Bicycle Race"... and damned if there weren't several Kroxes for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone.")

12. How can I save my little boy
From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
Russians - Sting - (Ronald) Reagan (The Actor!?!? Damned, how were there not a bunch of popular 80's songs that name dropped The Gipper?)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist whose lyrics mention an actor or actress (preferrably only one), and name that thespian for 3 total points.

Because I had such a difficult time (much more than I figured I would) filling out this game, I didn't count multiple-actor Kroxes against anyone. There's too many songs with an entire cast in them like "Vogue"...

Image Bonus: Who's ready for their closeup?

I can't remember (and there's no way it could be unseen) if Frank used that magazine cover mrkelley posted during his Phyllis year or not... but that was as instant an IBB as there will ever be. Holy crap, I hope the photographer got hazard pay...
