#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Tue Dec 08, 2020 3:51 am

Air Force pilot who was the first man to break the sound barrier and whose exploits were popularized in Tom Wolfe's book, The Right Stuff, and the subsequent movie, in which he was played by Sam Shepard. Yeager shot down 13 German planes during World War II, then broke speed records multiple times while flying the X-1 jet.

Age 97.

The X-1 was a rocket, not a jet. He was the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight using it.
