The Biggest Defect of the Left

A Steven Hayward column on Powerline yesterday. I second this column heartily as my thoughts had been turning in that direction for awhile now.

>>>>"When asked to name the single greatest defect of the left, I usually answer quite narrowly: an inability to think in terms of tradeoffs. This is why liberals, owing to a Kantian-inspired disposition that favors intentions above consequences, tend always to utopianism,<<<<<

>>>"As Thomas Sowell likes to say, “There are no solutions, there are only trade-offs; and you try to get the best trade-off you can get, that’s all you can hope for.”<<<<

It's amazing that the left gets accused of not being willing to engage in tradeoffs when other countries do exactly what the left is urging and have far better health statistics and better economies. They are listening to science and not to Donald Trump and the Powerline blog.

As far as political tradeoffs are concerned, you've got Mitch McConnell, who has held up additional stimulus relief for months, as the chief example of my-way-or-the-highwayism, who is in charge of the senate for now.
