RIP? Regal Theaters

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sat Oct 03, 2020 11:16 pm

The second largest chain in the United States will be closing all US locations this week. The parent company Cineworld (the largest chain in the UK) is also closing all its theaters in Great Britain and Ireland after the announcement Friday that the next James Bond movie, scheduled to open in November, is being postponed until the spring of 2021. There is only one major release still scheduled to open in the US before Christmas, Disney's animated Soul on November 20, although it could move to Disney Plus as well.

It's unsure if or when the theaters will reopen. Regal reopened its Atlanta theaters at the end of August, but a couple of them have already closed for good due to lack of business.

It's now official. All the Regal Theaters in the US will be closing Thursday, as will the Cineworld locations in Great Britain and Ireland. Reopening will depend on when more product is available. This will affect about 40,000 US employees of Regal.

The total box office for last weekend for all movies combined is expected to be about $10-11 million. On the same weekend last year, more theaters were open, and The Joker premiered. Total box office was about $150 million. A re-release of the 1993 film, Hocus Pocus, finished in second place, barely behind Tenet. The rest of the Top 10 included Beetlejuice and The Empire Strikes Back. The New Mutants and Unhinged, released in August, are still in the Top 10 as well. Several movies in the Top 10, based on per screen averages, showed an average of 20-50 people per theater attending over the entire weekend. Many theaters have cut back substantially on the number of showings per week.

The top-rated new release of the week is Possessor, a horror film directed by Noel Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg, in ninth place. I will be going to see Possessor at the drive-in later this week. I've been to about a half-dozen movies at the drive-in, and they are doing decent business even with crappy movies during the middle of the week.
