WWTBAM Bored

I'll be going into my office tomorrow for only the second time since March. It's also going to be the last time, because I'm retiring tomorrow. There won't be much actual work done tomorrow, just moving bunches of files from my office to that of the woman who will be taking over for me. They aren't having a party since no one is around, but the good thing about working for the lottery is that they have tons of swag, so I'm going home with bunches of coolers, pens, calendars, coffee mugs, sweat shirts, umbrellas, and the like.

I actually decided on this over the Christmas holidays and planned the timing so that Mrs. SSS and I could go up to my nephew's wedding in Virginia in October. Of course, a lot has changed since then, including the wedding, which won't take place until next summer. I also had visions of going with Mrs. SSS to the mid-afternoon senior discount buffet at Sweet Tomatoes or the Golden Corral. Those won't be happening either, one permanently, and one not for a while.

I've got a number of projects planned, the first of which is to revamp my website, which has been frozen in place for months. Those who followed the site didn't miss many film reviews since I didn't go to the movies for months either (that will make updating the site somewhat easier). The main thing I'll be doing though is spending more time with Mrs. SSS. We've been together in the sense of being under one roof 24 hours a day for months, but with my work schedule, we haven't had as many activities as I would like and I hope to remedy that soon. And with some perfect timing, the local drive-in actually has two good double features coming next week, which means that I'll be seeing more big-screen movies in one week than I have in six months.

My immediate goal is to do better in my retirement than Roger Ebert, Andy Rooney, and Morley Safer did in theirs. After next week, we'll see where we go from there.

Congratulations! I'm still working, but my clients have me just babysitting their systems. I might as well be retired, but the pay is way too good. I'm looking for another one that will keep me busier.

I'm glad I own this book -- bought it for a book club for more than $16.31 and worth every penny.

Well, I'm now up on my first official day of retirement. Three things I learned yesterday:

1) Our own offices, our entire office building, and much of downtown Atlanta is still pretty much deserted during the work day. I left to go home a little before 5:00 on a Friday afternoon. A year ago, this would have taken me nearly an hour. It took less than half that time.

2) I now have a lifetime supply of pens based on the number that were squirreled away in my office in drawers, under stacks of paper, and in other odd places. It's amazing the number of companies that want to do business with the Georgia Lottery.

3) I can finally buy a lottery ticket again, but both the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots are between $20 and $30 million. Not even worth it.

One thing you'll find is that weekends will lose their significance and that you may struggle to remember what day of the week it is.

I can guarantee you that my granddaughters are infinitely more trouble than any other BB's. They're 29 and 30.

My grandchildren are safely two counties over. It's a 50 year old daughter in the next bedroom I have to deal with.
