This is an interesting article which draws comparisons with an earlier scourge, one which fortunately didn't directly affect most of us - polio, and how the view in the pre-Salk days was similar to our current fears of COVID-19.
My first wife, who is 11 year older than I, spent her childhood until about age 8 in that world. She told of a lot of things, like swimming pools, being closed because they weren't sure if that was how it was transmitted or not. She also related of a cousin who had to go the iron lung route in the early 1950s, and only lived about a year with it.
