I don't understand why Jane didn't trust the answer Louis gave her. But even more, I don't understand why Louis didn't explain his answer more thoroughly, so that she'd believe it. Surely, she must have taken airline flights to Europe, crossing all those different time zones, where one passes the Atlantic provinces of Canada, then passes south of Greenland, then Iceland, before finally approaching Ireland and the UK. No way Iceland's in the same time zone as NY!

Actually, it's not that stupid. A number of countries and localities use "odd" time zones. All of China is in one single time zone. A number of countries have 30 minute time zones that are a half-hour ahead of or behind other countries due north or south of them (including India). So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Iceland might have decided for some reason to change its time zone. Article on odd time zones:

Yes, there are "odd" time zones. The 30 minute time zones are sensible if you think back to before standardized time zones were invented, when "noon" was whenever the sun reached its highest point in the sky, wherever you were. (Go watch Master and Commander again, for the scene where the midshipmen were getting their sextant lessons.) There's no hard-and-fast reason why every area has to pick one of 24 standard times, so if the center of your country lines up better on a 30 minute slot, why not?

Still, there would have to be some pretty odd rationales for Iceland (which Google tells me actually follows Greenwich Mean Time, with no daylight saving times) to ever pick the same time zone as New York! Especially when the +1 gave a good explanation for the right answer, regarding how South America is so much further east than North America.

The Chimney Rock National Historic Site in Nebraska may be the most historically significant one, since it was a landmark along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Mormon Trail.

And looking at what we've learned from the Ancestral Puebloans, the Colorado Chimney Rock is highly significant. It was the northeasternmost site of the Chacoan Empire, probably situated there because the bluff was an ideal astronomy observation point. Learning about Chimney Rock's legacy is where I first learned about the 18 1/2 year (approximately) lunar standstill cycle. They had all this stuff nailed -- really amazing stuff.
