Reading "Three Seconds Until Midnight" about plagues and stuff.
Setting aside the obvious advancements in medicine over time
It was noted that back when European countries had a lot of tropical colonies that there was a large institutional knowledge base about tropical diseases and so forth. As the colonies went away, that knowledge base was lost forever. It is questionable if we have it back even now.
