WWTBAM Bored

I've got Windows 10, version 1809 on my computer. About a month ago, the computer attempted to automatically install an upgrade to version 1909. It didn't go well and hung up on a blue screen saying the install was 90% completed for several hours. I had to do a reboot upon which the computer reset to my old version 1809.

Last night the computer tried the same thing with the same result. I'm reading that Windows will stop supporting version 1809 in May and I want to be on some more recent version by then. However, I'm working from home now and I can't afford to be without my computer for a lengthy period of time so I want to be sure that if I do some sort of update at night, it goes well. I've read that installing something called the Windows 10 Media Creation tool and running the update through there would help. Alternatively, I understand that Microsoft will be out with a version 2004 within the next month and I'm wondering if I should just wait and update to that when it becomes available.

Any thoughts or any other alternatives?

Press Windows + S to launch the start menu’s search bar. Type “troubleshoot” in the dialogue box and click on the first result which comes forth.

Select “Windows Update” and click the button “Run the troubleshooter”.

You might be prompted that the troubleshooter requires administrator access to check for problems with your system. Click the option “Try troubleshooting as an administrator”.

Restart your computer after the fixes have been made.

I didn't have a chance yet because I want to do a full back up first but I'll probably have a lighter work schedule tomorrow.

Good idea, but it's not necessary before running the troubleshooter.

Well, I finally ran the troubleshooter and tried the update again and it hung up at the same 90%. When I rebooted the computer, I tried another fix I read about online, which was to run the update through something called windows media creation tool, which is used to create boot disks on flash drives or DVDs. You can also use it to install an upgrade. That didn't work either, but at least the program automatically restored the older version of Windows 10 I had. It gave me an error code: 0x8007042B-0x4000D.

One other thing they suggest in some of the sites I checked is to disable external antivirus programs, so tonight I'll try it again and disable Malwarebytes first.

I used the update tool on that page, which is what eventually gave me the error message.

Anyone else missing the time when Microsoft named their update software the "Critical Update Notification Tool"?

You may abbreviate that as you like.

This is rather complicated but may work:

Some users reported that they had been able to resolve the error 0x8007042B by resetting the Windows Update components. In order for your system to properly work, it has to rely on certain services. If these services are corrupted, it is possible for you to encounter the error 8007042B while installing updates.

On the other hand, you can fix this issue by running a couple of commands. That said, follow the steps below:

On your keyboard, press Windows Key+S.
Type “command prompt” (no quotes).
Right-click Command Prompt from the list, then select Run as Administrator.
Once Command Prompt is up, paste the following commands:
net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

pause

After running the commands, check if you’ve gotten rid of the error.

I'll try turning off Malwarebytes first tonight and if that doesn't work, I'll try your fixes. I'm very nervous about messing with commands on the machine.

You wouldn't get a BSOD if you made a typo, but you could have done a copy-and-paste to avoid those anyway.

Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program. It is intended to be used in conjunction with one.

The free version of Malwarebytes is a scanner which I think you have to activate manually to run a scan (it's been quite a while since all I had was the free version). If it detects a virus or other malware, it removes it (if it can). The paid version (and it's a one-time license fee, not an annual fee) is an anti-virus program that blocks viruses and malware and starts up on my computer whenever I turn it on. It also warns about visiting or taking downloads from bad websites. It runs a nightly scan on my computer and it's been a long time since it detected anything.

I tried three times to upgrade to Version 1909 of Windows 10, and the download hung up each time (the last time using the Windows Media Creation Tool). When I disabled Malwarebytes, the upgrade went through.

EDIT: It turns out I misspoke earlier. When I bought Malwarebytes Premium, it was a one-time lifetime license, and I'm now grandfathered in. Anyone buying it now gets a one-year license.

Wrong; update your knowledge. The Pro version is a full-blown anti-virus program.

Malwarebytes detected a Zip file that has a bad program in it on my desktop system overnight. It was from 2006! I'm sure it wasn't a false positive.

After all the trouble I had with the last update, the current one (to the 4/20 version of Windows 10) went very easy. I didn't have to do any of the tricks I tried last time; it just updated automatically. In retrospect, I probably should just have waited until this version came out and skipped the November update entirely.
