My sil, bil, niece have tested positive. Sil has been coughing a lot, but said it's like a bad cold. Niece, who's a teacher, has been working virtually. Is fatigued but better. She's Type 1 diabetes so that was a worry. They're in Kentucky. Nephew, who's in Coast Guard in Connecticut, had it asymptomatically.

There ya go.
Edit: bil negative!
I'm glad it hasn't hit them too hard, at least yet. I hope they continue on a path to recovery. This bug does have ups and downs, so that's not yet assured, but I am glad that they seem to be among the luckier of the people to contract it.

Everyone's still safe after your Thanksgiving, I trust? --Bob
Yep. No one is sick that I know of. Unless it's of leftovers.

Oh, and it was just sil and immediate family for their thxgiving. She and our niece had shopped at two stores but all were wearing masks. And our nephew in the CG had been only one wearing a mask out of 6 in the training session whe were positive.

I'm glad they were careful. Looks like the care paid off for the rest of your/her family.

Shopping is a lot safer, as long as everyone's masked, because people aren't hanging out with the same non-household members for extended periods of time. --Bob

This Saturday's Michigan-Ohio State game has been canceled. Under previously announced Big 10 rules, this makes Ohio State ineligible for the conference championship, although they would be eligible for the BCS. On the one hand, this would eliminate the possibility of Ohio State suffering an embarrassing loss in the conference championship, but it would make a stronger case for a one-loss Texas A&M team in the BCS instead of Ohio State. Which brings us to...

This week's Cincinnati-Tulsa game, which has already been postponed once, has been canceled as well. The two teams are scheduled to play next week in the AAC championship. Cincinnati has an outside chance to make the BCS and needs all the wins it can get.

To the surprise of no one, the Big Ten has dropped its minimum-game requirement for the conference championship, and Ohio State will play Northwestern next week for the title, despite the Buckeyes only playing five games total. If they win that game, they will probably receive a bid to the BCS championship.

I suspect a lot of Indiana fans are displeased to hear this, because they would have been in the championship game had this not been changed.

An article today in Yahoo! Sports talks about the Rose Bowl (game) being in jeopardy:

https://sports.yahoo.com/is-the-rose-bo ... 30430.html

Basically, the article boo-hoos the fact that the game might have to be played someplace other than the namesake stadium.

Of course, the article does make a passing reference that it's happened before, with the 1942 Rose Bowl game, which was played in Durham NC. It was less than a month after the Pearl Harbor attack, and it was thought unsafe to have a large crowd of people on the west coast as a convenient target.

https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/uar ... /rose-bowl

Son of Spiff has suggested that it go to the home stadium of the higher-seeded team selecting that bowl (logically, it would be the #1 seed, if this were known in advance).

Now we are starting to see college football teams opting out of playing in bowl games.

ACC teams Boston College and Pitt have said they weren't going to play post season games this year.

LSU has declared a one year self-imposed bowl ban, but that wasn't a function of COVID.

Many schools, not just those playing in conference championships, will be finishing their seasons next week, with the bowls scheduled to begin the week after that. One week is not much time, especially with Christmas in the middle of that, to learn about a new opponent and make travel arrangements to take 100 people or more to a distant city to play in hostile health conditions in a near empty stadium.

And now, in another twist that could only happen in this season, the PAC-12 Championship, which was supposed to be between Washington (3-1) and USC (5-0) is now between Oregon (3-2) and USC. Washington's team is still too COVID-laden to play this weekend, including "zero offensive linemen" available, per their team spokesman.

Sadly, this is probably the least important Pac-12 Championship in years in terms of rewards -- or lack thereof -- for the winner. Not only is the winner, even an undefeated USC, not likely to hit the College Football Playoffs (pretty much set at Bama, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Ohio State now that Florida shot theirselves in the foot -- or the shoe, rather -- barring an upset of the latter two), but the winner doesn't even get to go to the traditional Rose Bowl game since it's tied up with the CFB semifinals.

Add Stanford and UVA to the list. I am sure there will be others to come.

July was the deadliest month for adults 25-44 in modern American history. It looks like we will have approximately 16,000 excess deaths in that age group by the end of 2020. In April and May in New York State, COVID killed 1,081 adults aged 20-49. The usual leading cause of death in that age group is unintentional accidents such as drug overdoses and road accidents, which (in 2018) combined for 495 deaths in that age group in 2018. --Bob

Viriginia Tech is among the latest group of teams to opt out of playing in a bowl. The Hokies finished 5-6 but would probably have gotten a bid this season. This is noteworthy because it breaks the nation's longest active bowl streak at 27 years. The University of Georgia now holds the longest bowl streak at 23 years (to be 24 after bids are announced next week).

The Sun Belt game between Coastal Carolina and Louisiana was CDC cancelled due to COVID issues within the South Carolina school, including an entire position group.

The Bowl schedule is out. There are currently 30 Bowl games on the schedule, plus the BCS championship, beginning on Monday, two days after the end of the regular season, with Appalachian State playing North Texas in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. North Texas finished the season 4-6, the first of several sub-.500 eams in bowls.

Currently, three slots remain open, an opponent for Army in the Independence Bowl, and two teams in the Military Bowl.

The schedule includes the Camellia Bowl between on Buffalo and Marshall on Christmas Day, traditionally an off day in the college bowl schedule. All games except the BCS championship will wrap up by January 2, when the traditional New Years bowls will be played.

Not anymore, and a 9-2 Army team is left unbowling.

The Independence Bowl couldn't find an opponent, so they cancelled the game. The Birmingham Bowl also pulled the plug, not finding anyone willing to play in it.

I would be telling the Army football team to keep their powder dry. The way things are going this year, some team is likely to have to cancel at the last minute.

And that may have just happened. Tennessee has pulled out of the Liberty Bowl due to positive COVID tests on some of the players and on head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

Definitely a step up from the Independence Bowl.

That's odd you should say that. Last week, I tweeted that I thought that Roku would make a deal to carry HBO Max before the weekend to make sure that no Roku users would miss out on Wonder Woman. The next day, the deal was finalized. Then, our local NBC station was in a dispute with DirecTV and AT&T Uverse, and I tweeted over the weekend that they needed to reach a deal quickly so people wouldn't miss out on Alex Trebek's last Jeopardy shows. On Sunday, the deal was finalized.

I'm psychic.
