General Mubarak became President of Egypt in 1981 after the assassination of Anwar Sadat. He maintained Sadat's peace treaty with Israel and encouraged Israel-Palestine peace initiatives. In 2011 the Arab Spring Tahrir Square demonstrations forced him to step down. In Egypt's first democratic election in its 5,000-year history, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood won, but he was overthrown by General Sisi a year later. This put the Obama administration in a bind, since they despised the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood but were legally required to oppose any coup. Mubarak was tried and acquitted for killing protesters. He died Tuesday at age 91.
