Okay, it was a joke. But what did it mean? That she's in cahoots with other candidates or what. Just don't get the joke or context.

Well, you can say this for Biden.
With his hand on the pulse of the youth zeitgeist-this should really nail down the 18 to 24 YO demographic.
You can't walk through a college campus without hearing numerous discussions of pony soldiers and their tactics.
And since this is kind of on the subject.

FWIW Biden says it's a quote from an old John Wayne movie and he's used it before. The problem is that no search turns up this quote from ANY movie. It appears to be a portmanteau of words from "Fort Apache" (a Wayne movie) and "Pony Soldier", starring Tyrone Power. Slate has an article about it.
