Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya has become the first person to run a sub-2 hour marathon. While not a world record (due to the amount of pacing assistance received), it is monumental as another step towards determining what the human body's performance limit might be, based on available technology.

I thought that because marathon courses aren’t standardized, world records weren’t generally recognized. That’s still a helluvan achievement. —Bob

You can add this to your list of things that you had wrong.

Kipchoge holds the marathon record at 2:01:39.

I am a little queasy about this accomplishment, given that it included so much outside assistance from a sponsor, pacers, water being handed to him from bicyclists, etc.

But it's not so different from someone rowing a boat across a large body of water, or swimming the English Channel. They mostly have assistance, or it would never be done.
