Career diplomat Joseph Charles Wilson IV achieved fame when he wrote a report that said Saddam Hussein didn't acquire raw material for weapons of mass destruction in Niger, contradicting one of George W. Bush's rationales for the Iraq war. In retaliation, journalist Robert Novak revealed that Wilson's wife Valerie Plame was a covert CIA agent, ending her career and endangering her sources. VP Cheney's chief of staff Scooter Libby went to jail for obstruction of justice related to the scandal.
Sean Penn played Wilson in the movie Fair Game.
Wilson died Friday at age 69.
Plame, who was divorced in 2017, is running for Congress in New Mexico.
