Longtime Manhattan District Attorney and Dick Wolf's inspiration for DA Adam Schiff on the first several seasons of Law and Order (Morgenthau appeared as a judge on one episode of the show). Among the cases Morgenthau's office prosecuted was subway shooter Bernard Goetz, John Gotti, Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, John Lennon's killer Mark David Chapman (pled guilty), and the Central Park Five. When DNA evidence exonerated the five, his office asked the judge to overturn the convictions. He retired in 2009 at age 90 and died at 99.
