I have mentioned a few times that in Spock College V2-2003 to 2006-age 36 t0 39-that I got to work on a mapping project of Oman for an archaeology professor.
We used Soviet topo maps (plus other things) and I have said before that those Soviet topo maps were scary good. Turns out my instincts were right and there is a book on the topic.
"The Red Atlas"
https://www.amazon.com/Red-Atlas-Soviet ... 170&sr=8-1
>>>but long before we had satellite imagery of any neighborhood at a finger’s reach, the amount the Soviet government knew about your family’s city, street, and even your home would astonish you. Revealing how this was possible, The Red Atlas is the never-before-told story of the most comprehensive mapping endeavor in history and the surprising maps that resulted.
>>>"Some of the detail suggests early satellite technology,<<<<
I figured out the early satellite tech part on my own.
Anyway, super cool.
