Drug raid in The Villages retirement community nets evidence of golf cart 'chop shop'

Five people are being held in a Florida jail on drug-related charges in connection with a SWAT-team raid in The Villages retirement community that turned up evidence of a possible "chop shop" operation for stolen golf cars.

Among those arrested was Kathleen Unrath, 43, niece of the ailing homeowner, who was not believed to be involved in any illegal activity.

Unrath, who lived in the house, said she was going to take care of her uncle but instead was allegedly running the illegal drug and chop shop businesses behind his back, deputies told WFTV.

Hello from Michigan:

Woman declared dead found alive inside Detroit funeral home

DETROIT – A 20-year-old woman who was declared dead by fire officials was found alive inside a Detroit funeral home Sunday.

Paramedics from the Southfield Fire Department were called to a home Sunday morning for an unresponsive woman, according to WXYZ.

Paramedics realized the woman wasn’t breathing and tried to revive her. After about 30 minutes, they determined she was deceased.

“The paramedics performed CPR and other life reviving methods for 30 minutes. Given medical readings and the condition of the patient, it was determined at that time that she did not have signs of life,” Southfield Fire Department Chief Johnny L. Menifee said in a statement.

The fire department contacted the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office and provided the woman’s medical data. Menifee said there was no indication of foul play.

Hours later, the staff at the James H. Cole funeral home discovered the woman was still breathing. For now, the department is withholding the woman’s name.

My home state of Georgia checks in:
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill said he was the target of a Social Security scam on Friday. Now, the man accused of calling his county-issued cellphone is wanted by deputies. In a news release, the sheriff’s office said Hill received a call from a man claiming to be an investigator with the federal government. The caller, later identified as Anthony Clark Jr., reportedly told the sheriff he was looking into the “fraudulent use” of Hill’s Social Security number.

“Amused, the sheriff decided to play along,” authorities said in the release, adding that Clark “had no idea that he was talking to and attempting to scam Clayton County’s top cop.” Hill said he gave the man a phony name and date of birth, as well as the last four digits of a made-up Social Security number. He also told the caller he recently lost his wallet at a local mall, but went back and retrieved it the following day. According to Hill, the caller began scolding him for not filing a police report. He then reportedly told the sheriff his personal information had been used to rent a car in Texas that was later linked to a murder investigation and money-laundering case. Clark also told Hill that the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service had taken out a warrant for his arrest, but that it was “being held” so the issue could be resolved, authorities said.

“When the man asked the sheriff for his credit card information, the conversation went downhill,” the release said, adding that Clark cursed at Hill before hanging up on him. The sheriff’s office traced the man’s phone number, and “within the hour” deputies surrounded a Henry County home where Clark was believed to be residing. Neighbors told police the man they were searching for had moved about a week earlier, however. Authorities also discovered that Clark was wanted in South Carolina for failing to make child support payments, the release said, adding the attempted scam earned the man the No. 11 spot on the sheriff’s “Ten Most Wanted” list.

Florida man kills mother in argument over orange juice, car

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — A man told police he just lost it when he shot his mother to death during an argument in North Miami Beach.

According to police, Luis Martin Pages, 29, called 911 on Sunday afternoon to say he killed his mother.

Pages told police they had an argument after he asked to borrow her car to look for a job. He said she told him "no" since it's Labor Day and everything would be closed.

He then grabbed a jar of orange juice out of the refrigerator. He said she took it from him and threw it out, police said. According to the arrest report, the argument escalated to the point where Pages pulled a gun out of his pocket and shot his mother. He told police he didn't know how many times he shot her, but that he fired all the bullets, and normally kept six bullets in the gun.

Police said Pages then tried to shoot himself but realized his gun was empty, according to the report.

Hello from Michigan:

Man finds possible brain wrapped in foil on Lake Michigan beach

Police in Wisconsin were left befuddled after an apparent brain was found on a Lake Michigan beach.

According to Fox 6 in Milwaukee, the brain was found by construction worker Jimmy Senda, who was walking along the shore at Samuel Myers Park in Racine on Tuesday.

“I don’t really know how to explain it, it didn’t register...I was just like, ‘What is this?’” Senda told the TV station. "I came across this square package, wrapped in aluminum foil, and around it, it had a pink rubber band.

“Curiosity got to me, so I popped it open and it looked like a chicken breast -- kind of. It took a little bit for it to really (register) of what was going on; it was a brain.”

Police are working with the Racine County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if the brain is human or not.

Florida dad defends fifth-grade son wearing Hooters mask to school

It’s the breast mask ever.

A Florida dad says there’s nothing wrong with his fifth-grade son wearing a Hooters-themed mask to school– after the principal said it was “offensive” and made the boy take it off.

“He told me it was deemed offensive,” Steve Golba told Fox 35 Orlando. “I told him we go there as a family. We eat their wings, we watch sports. I said we have chocolate cake! We go there all the time. It is not an offensive mask.”

Ian Golba, 11, has been wearing the mask, covered with the name of the restaurant, to Sunset Park Elementary in Windermere since school began in August.

But on Tuesday, a teacher confronted him about it, WESH reported.

“I wore it and she said it was not appropriate for school,” Ian told the outlet. “I asked her why, and she said, ‘If you really want to know why, go ask the principal.’”

Good morning, Vietnam:

Police seize 345,000 used condoms that were cleaned and sold as new

Police in Vietnam have confiscated an estimated 345,000 used condoms which had been cleaned and resold as new, state media reported.

Footage broadcast by state-owned Vietnam Television (VTV) this week showed dozens of large bags containing the used contraceptives scattered across the floor of a warehouse in the southern province of Binh Duong.

Police said the bags weighed more than 360 kilograms (794 lbs), equivalent to 345,000 condoms, according to VTV.

The owner of the warehouse said they had received a "monthly input of used condoms from an unknown person," state newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.

A woman detained during the bust told police that the used prophylactics were first boiled in water then dried and reshaped on a wooden phallus before being repackaged and resold.

VTV said it was not clear how many of the recycled condoms had already been sold. The detained woman said she had received $0.17 for every kilogramme of recycled condoms she produced.

Neither she nor the owner of the warehouse were available for comment.

A man who paid $150 for a “full-contact experience” with a black leopard says he had to undergo multiple surgeries after he was mauled by the fully-grown animal in an enclosure behind a Davie home.

A picture obtained by Local 10 News shows Dwight Turner’s heavily bandaged head and ear after the savage attack, which detectives from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say happened behind a home on Earnest Boulevard on Aug. 31.

The man who lives there, identified as Michael Poggi, has a Facebook page saying he runs an animal sanctuary for rare and endangered animals.

Authorities say Poggi was charged with allowing full contact with an extremely dangerous animal and was cited for maintaining captive wildlife in an unsafe condition.

Investigators say Poggi charged the 50-year-old Turner $150 for a “full-contact experience” with his black leopard — to “play with it, rub its belly and take pictures.”

He got exactly what he paid for. There aren't many experiences more "full-contact" than a mauling.

Hello from Scotland:

Soccer match ruined when AI-controlled camera mistakes ref’s bald head for ball

Technology in sports is a beautiful thing, but sometimes even the greatest inventions can go wrong. This happened over the weekend in a soccer game in Scotland, when an AI-controlled camera got confused, and thought a lineman’s bald head was the ball.

The camera was programmed to automatically follow the ball, removing the need for a human camera person. Outside of taking a person’s job, it seems kind of neat in theory. The issue was that the camera couldn’t tell the difference between the ball and the bald head, continually focusing on a man standing around not doing much, rather than actually let fans see the action.

To make matters worse Scotland is under strict social distancing measures. With no fans in attendance this was the only ways for fans of Iverness and Ayr United to watch the match, and instead they were treated to 90 minutes of head watching.

When I had my not quite full contact experience with a tiger, the rescue facility brought several of their big cats in for the event, including a leopard. They allowed people (including me) to get their pictures taken with the tiger, but they wouldn't let anyone pose with the leopard. The explanation was that leopards were too temperamental and could turn without warning. That's why circuses have (or more accurately had) lion and tiger acts but rarely had leopard acts.

I guess this was one more example.

And by the way, the so-called "black panther" is not a panther but either a leopard or jaguar with a condition called melanism which produces the same dark pigment that's normally only in their spots over their entire body. If you get close enough to such an animal, you can usually see that it doesn't have a uniformly black coat.

Florida retiree wrestles puppy from jaws of alligator

(CNN)In a dramatic encounter recorded by surveillance cameras, a Florida man chased an alligator under water and rescued his 3-month-old puppy from the jaws of death.

Richard Wilbanks, 74, of Estero ran into his backyard pond, wrestled the gator above surface, and pried its jaws open to free Gunner, his Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Gunner was mostly unharmed.
"We were just out walking by the pond," Wilbanks told CNN, "and it came out of the water like a missile. I never thought an alligator could be that fast. It was so quick."
He said adrenaline or instinct kicked in, and "I just automatically jumped into the water."

Man Dies From Mass Organ Failure After Being Dared To Eat A Gecko

A family is looking for answers after a father of three died 10 days after being dared to eat a gecko at a party.

David Dowell, who was 34, was dared to eat a gecko at a Christmas party on December 1 last year. After allegedly ingesting the animal, he continued to party before heading home. Then, on Monday, December 3, he began to feel incredibly unwell.

"It was coming out both ends," David's sister Hannah told The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH). "He was really sick and the moment he started throwing up and it was green, that’s when they rang the ambulance."

"His testicles were swollen up to grapefruits and there was fluid leaking from them," his mother told the SMH. "[The doctors] said that was normal, it was just all of the fluid in his stomach cavity."

Florida Man's Attempt To Kiss Rattlesnake Goes Horribly Wrong

A Florida man is recovering in hospital, after his attempts to kiss a rattlesnake went horribly wrong.

Ron Reinold was playing with a rattlesnake that had been captured by his neighbor the previous day. At some point, Mr Reinold attempted to kiss the snake, a local CBS channel reports.

It is not known what type of kiss the man went for, or where on the snake the man was attempting to kiss, or frankly why anyone would think attempting such a thing was a good idea, but the snake proceeded to bite him fiercely on the tongue.

Charles Goff, Reinold's neighbor, said that he had found the venomous snake on Monday and had put it in a tank because he didn't know how to handle it.

Unfortunately, the next day his neighbor Reinold and a few other un-named individuals went to investigate the tank.

"The next morning before I got up, they were playing with the snake," Goff told Action News Jax. "One boy said, 'I'm going to kiss it in the mouth,' and the snake bit him in the face."

It's not clear why Reinold tried to kiss the snake, or what technique he was using in his attempts.

This one's from Texas:

The Texas Alert system issued an amber alert for the Chucky doll as a suspect in the abduction of his son Glen. The suspect is described as 28 years old, 3foot 1 inch tall, weighing 16 pounds and wielding a kitchen knife. This alert was issued Friday three times in emails. A photo of the suspect and victim:

The agency called the alert the result of a "test malfunction."

From Cajun country:

This woman used Gorilla Glue instead of hair spray. She ended up in the hospital

A Louisiana woman has sought medical treatment after mistakenly using Gorilla Glue spray adhesive in place of actual hair spray.

Tessica Brown's plight went viral earlier in February after she revealed that her hair had been stuck in the same style for a month since she substituted her usual Got2b Glued spray with the industrial-strength glue when she ran out.
"My hair, it don't move. You hear what I'm telling you? It don't move," she said in the original video posted to TikTok.

Florida Metal Musician Turns Uncle’s Skeleton Into ‘Skelecaster’ Guitar

A metal-loving musician in Tampa, Florida, has just made a guitar unlike any other ― no bones about it.

That’s because Prince Midnight made his “Skelecaster” using both the remains of a leftover Fender Telecaster and the bones of his dearly departed Uncle Filip, the man who introduced him to the rock genre back in the 1990s.

Filip died in a motorcycle accident in Greece in 1996 at the age of 28, and his skeleton was donated to a local college.

“After 20 years, he ended up in a cemetery my family had to pay rent on. Like, literally in a wooden box,” Midnight told HuffPost. “It’s a big problem in Greece because the Orthodox religion doesn’t want people cremated.”

So, with the help of a local funeral home, Prince Midnight had Uncle Filip’s bones sent from Greece.

That's just creepy. I get a "Twilight Zone" vibe.
