Again, a brief clip from a longer interview that's very possibly taken out of context. If you'll note, she's pretty much already laughing and smiling when the clip starts, which could well be a carryover from the tone of the earlier conversation. She laughs more when the interviewer asks "do you go on field trips," obviously an attempt at levity she reacted to. And her basic point is correct: terrorists view Al Qaeda and similar groups with a fervent intensity that you don't see when people are discussing America or England. Understanding the terrorist mindframe is key to stopping them. The tape also cuts off rather abruptly at that point, so if she did follow up on her observation, that wasn't part of what appears in this clip.

Now, if you find and play the entire interview, then we can discuss how "un-American" she might be. But if you want to carefully curate a clip that was obviously chosen for maximum shock value, then you're just playing the usual right-wing games.

A study released today revealed that AOC was mentioned 3,181 times on Fox News and Fox Business Channel over a six week period from late February to early April (almost 76 times per day). If I had to guess, I would say that Ilhan Omar is second among freshman House Democrats with almost everyone else far, far behind.

I think that Ilhan Omar was not prepared for the onslaught of negative press and nitpicking she would be subjected to, which quite frankly in unprecedented for any incoming freshman Congressperson in the first three months of office with the exception of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She hasn't handled it nearly as well as AOC has and she has said things that have come out wrong. But we've never seen this degree of scrutiny, statements out of context, or nitpicking in the past against any freshman of either party.

Is she anti-Semitic? I don't know. I think a good bit of her problem stems from inexperience with public relations in general, and that her comments are the same sorts of things that Flock and the others are oh, so eager to give Trump a pass on. And, in addition, there have been a relatively few inflammatory statements that are ping ponged around the right wing blogosphere endlessly. And she has apologized for her ignorance when she's been made aware of it, unlike others who seem to view public defiance as a badge of honor (hint, Trump).

By the way, here is a pretty good analysis of Rep. Omar's speech to CAIR. Her point was that American Muslims should act like Americans who have made this country their home, not like guests who are afraid to offend their hosts.

And at the end of her speech, Rep. Omar "forcefully demanded that Muslims call one another to account. 'It doesn’t matter if that country is being run by my father, my brother, my sister,' Omar declared in the last section of her speech. 'I will criticize that country' if it is 'violating basic human rights.'” Which is very, very different from how that speech has been portrayed. --Bob
