My guy at Frontier Partisans has a post on the Old Banana Republic stores.

I lived in an area without these BR stores and I am sad that I missed them.

They sound like an awesome place.

I seem to remember the old BR stores, though I never was a mall shopping type.

I LOVED the old Banana Republic store in San Francisco.

I had two skirts, two button down shirts and a dress that I loved wearing when I was covering minor league baseball. It was perfect clothing for the San Joaquin Valley in the summer when the temps were in the low 100s and the press boxes may or may not have had electric fans.

Easy packing for road trips. I still have two scarves.

Eh, who wants to buy old bananas?

I never was a big Banana Republic fan. BR looked exactly like every other store in my local mall. It must have been opened in the post-Gap acquisition era. (The Gap was the only store where I could find jeans that fit.)

This discussion does make me nostalgic for J. Peterman's fabulous catalogs, however. Four times a year, I would savor the Scott-and-Zelda-esque copy describing their offerings, and from time to time, I would order something I thought was fabulous. I don't still have any of those clothes, but I do still have -- rolled up in their shipping tube -- the blueprints for the Titanic. They are huge, but it just occurred to me that I have a lot more wall space now than I ever had in the past, and I'm thinking about the best way and place to use them. Framing will cost a fortune, but it might be worth it.

I actuallly wore the urban sombrero. I loved it. Definitely kept the sun out of my eyes.

Sliver - I am talking the Banana Republic of 30 years ago - the timing dovetailed with the Out of Africa fashion (also got a couple a nice coordinating pieces at The Limited). I was the Karen Blixen of the pressbox.

One of my favorite outfits all time came from Peterman. A brown herringbone jacket and sweeping brown skirt. I wore it al lot for special hearings.

It amazes me that I can remember outfits from 30 years ago. But, I also remember some dresses TLAF made for me when I was 8. CLothes make the woman.
