at the gym

20 minutes.

Darn thing kept telling me to go slower to keep my heart rate at the target.

I'm gonna predict that Pea's heinie is gonna hit the ceiling before your heinie does.

This is based on a logical conclusion.

I think.

Having your heart rate above the target can be just as counter-productive as being too low (for the desired results).

I may not look it, but when I started my new job, I joined the health club in the basement of the building. It's very convenient so I can work out within minutes after leaving work, and my company subsidizes the dues (after five years with the company, the membership is free).

Mrs. SSS never thought I would stick with it, but I've been working out, most times 3-4 nights a week, for a year now. I do mostly the treadmill on a slope at a fast walking/slow running pace for about an hour. I look rather ungainly but I'm developing my stamina and helping burn off the junk I eat.

It might serve you to do some calculations of your own, rather than trusting the generic ones the machine does for you.

Find you real resting heart rate - the one that your heart beats at upon waking, without an alarm, before you sit up. Use that to determine the target. It could be even lower than the one the machine has for you or it could be higher.

I also know that my elliptical tells me a different number when I hold onto the handles that tell you your heart rate from the number I get from wearing the heart rate monitor around my torso.
