Actor, writer, and director, best known for writing the musical Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which won a Tony for his wife Carlin Glynn. As an actor, Materson's best known role was as Katharine Ross's husband in The Stepford Wives. He was also the father of actress Mary Stuart Masterson (who made her film debut as Peter's daughter in Stepford).
