Question to Melly RE: Geoff Collins

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Dec 07, 2018 1:01 pm

Georgia Tech has just hired Temple coach Geoff Collins as our new football coach, replacing Paul Johnson, who retired after 11 seasons.

What's the scoop on him? What type of coach is he? He was only at Temple a couple of years.

In a bit of a scheduling oddity, Georgia Tech is playing at Temple next season, their first ever meeting in football (Temple plays Duke in the Independence Bowl this year).

I was going to post a message to you about Geoff Collins ….

You want enthusiasm? You got it. "Mayhem!" It's lots of fun.

Third down is the "money down," with $$$ signs. On Star Wars night, the kids holding the $$$ signs were all in stormtrooper outfits. That kind of thing. Gets the student body to buy in and it's LOTS of fun to watch.

As a coach, Collins likes a mix of run and pass. Lots of catch and run type of routes, set up the long pass. Not afraid to go on it on fourth down. He had fantastic chemistry with Special Teams Coach Ed Foley (who was a holdover from Matt Rhule) - and they ran fake field goals, fake punts, etc. Most of them worked.

He is a Georgia native and former Tech assistant. Tech is his dream job, so his going there after only two years at Temple is as much a function of the timing of Johnson's retirement.

The staff will remain here to coach the bowl game, unlike when Matt Rhule went to Baylor.

There's already a buzz around the opener next year.

If I had to bet on a new Temple coach, I would go with Fran Brown, a Camden NJ native and member of Rhule's Temple and Baylor staffs. He recruited some of the best players on the current Owl squad. With Foley as his top assistant.

That's one of the big problems at Tech right now, a lack of enthusiasm around the football team. Attendance was way down and that's one of the reasons Tech is playing in a third-rate bowl in Detroit this year.

The feeling is that Johnson's option offense limited the recruits who would play at Tech, and our potential starting quarterback next season hasn't shown much passing ability.

I blame this entire mess on Melly.

But at least we're finally rid of Geoff Collins and probably the idiot AD who gave him a seven-year contract because they said it was necessary to allow enough time to build the program the right way.

It took Clay Helton two games to scrap the option offense at 3-9 Georgia Southern and beat Nebraska. It took Collins 3+ years to get embarrassed by UCF, Northern Illinois, the Citadel, and, yes, Temple.

Tech lost six games under Collins by 40 points. Tech lost six games by 40 points in the previous 42 seasons.

This season, Collins took charge of the special teams. Tech has had four punts blocked in four games. Our last coach, Paul Johnson, had four punts blocked in 11 seasons.

Misery loves company, but to cheer you up, here's a great Nebraska football highlight.

It took Tech and our interim Coach Brent Key one game to prove what a complete screw-up Geoff Collins was a coach. Tech goes on the road and beats a ranked Pittsburgh team. The talent was there all along; the coaching was not. Now a bowl game is not out of the question.
