Unlike the politicos on the Bored, I don’t think of everything as a game with wins and losses. If we do get a new trading arrangement with China, everyone wins, and Pres. Trump deserves credit.

I also hope he’s successful with Turkey. Their economy sucks, there’s internal dissent, and Russia’s unhappy with them. You’d think Erdogan wouldn’t antagonize his main ally over a jailed American pastor and a Turkish pastor in the Poconos.

So a righty publication cherrypicks from liberal publications?

Do you really think Trump is that smart?

He may not be a genius, but he's a whole lot smarter than you, by every measure.

This same blog post calls Trump's cancelling of his military parade as a triumph for him as well. The people meeting are rather low level. Here's what the NYT had to say:
Trade experts were skeptical on Thursday that the coming talks would prove fruitful. Chinese officials have expressed frustration that the United States has not empowered a point person in the trade talks who can speak on behalf of Mr. Trump. In May, after Mr. Mnuchin announced that the trade war was “on hold,” the president scrapped the agreement that the countries were working toward and called for more tariffs.

Mr. Malpass is even less empowered than Mr. Mnuchin to strike a deal, and while the Treasury Department has been the agency most aggressively pushing for a trade truce, the Office of the United States Trade Representative, led by Robert E. Lighthizer, is formally charged with overseeing the lists of Chinese goods facing tariffs.

At the Group of 20 summit meeting of finance ministers in Argentina last month, Mr. Mnuchin said that he had engaged only in “chitchat” with his Chinese counterparts and that the ball was in China’s court to initiate a breakthrough.

“This looks like it will be a waste of time for the two govts,” Scott Kennedy, the director of the Project on Chinese Business and Political Economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said on Twitter. “Who thinks US Treasury Dept is empowered to make THE deal to end the trade war?”

Again, it's better that they're talking than that they're not talking, but they were talking two months ago before Trump instituted his latest round of tariffs. This could well be the usual pattern with Trump, take a gigantic victory lap and then watch things fizzle. We've been talking to North Korea as well for the last three months.

I think he's just following Trumps unfortunate lead.
