I don't know much about any of the horses this year as I really haven't kept up. Not raining now, but it has rained buckets since Thursday.

I think I'll go with 21-1 Gayego....just because. He's won a race or two. We'll see what happens. Won't be long now. I hope I haven't provided the kiss of death and he finishes dead last!

I have a 13-4-5 trifecta with Bob Black Jack, Court Vision and the fillie Eight Belles. Look for one of those horses to be the one to finish 20th.

Larry Stumes of the S.F. Chronicle picked Gayego. KRHarris may not be the kiss of death, but Stumes is. No way that horse wins.

It would be funny to see Z Humor and Z Fortune coming down the stretch and hear the announcer call that one without sounding French.

I'm from Louisville and used to being in some kind of Derby pool, however, since moving south that hasn't happened the past 30 years. So I sort of watch the Derby all by myself on the first Saturday in May.

Wonder if that Stumes guy used the same "just because" reasoning I did?
At least I'm not the only person to pick him to win.

Dang, is it commercialized enough? How many sponsors did they announce just for the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home"? Times have changed, haven't they? Before we know it, next year we might be watching the race from Papa John's Churchill Downs.

Edited when I re-read my post and saw I had two words reversed. Sounds much better now.

I thought they were all going to end up on the ground when they bunched up at the beginning. Scared me! That was quite a finish!

Kay, times have changed since you and I grew up in Louisville. Ever since Stephen Foster's day, everyone knew that in Kentucky, the "darkies are gay." But now, thanks to the legislature's action in 1986, everyone in Kentucky is gay.

Already? A couple of commentators said it could be her heart or an aneurysm. So sad for those who were involved with her. It's like losing a family member.

I hadn't kept up with that, Ed. That "KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, A&W and Long John Silver's intro to My Old Kentucky Home was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard.

How do you run a strong race and finish second on two broken ankles? Or how do you run a strong race and finish second, then break two ankles after the race is over? I haven't seen any video that shows how and when the break happened.

I've got the Ky Derby website up and the TV on, searched Google news and I still can't find out what happened. The replay doesn't focus on it either. It's just dumbfounding!

Eight Belles crossed the finish line second in the Kentucky Derby today and then jockey Gabriel Saez heard the worst sound possible – a pop.

Saez said the filly did not take a bad step, but he heard the pop and tried to pull her up.

“I tried to get her to stop,” he said. “I tried to get her to stop, but she wouldn’t stop.”

Dr. Larry Bramlege the on-call veterinarian from the American Association of Equine Practitioners said the filly had a condylar fractures of both front legs. That is the same type of break that was suffered by 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro in one leg.

She was euthanized on the track.

Eight Belles was euthanized on the turn heading into the backstretch about seven minutes after the race.

Saez was unhurt.

The lateral condylar fracture, usually seen in racehorses, runs from the front to the back of the leg and up the lateral side (outside). This can often be repaired well enough so that horses can go back to work just as strong as before the injury.

Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on call veterinarian on site, said there was no way to save the Unbridled’s Song filly owned by Rick Porter, trained by Larry Jones, and ridden by Gabe Saez.

"That is an injury that is painful. There was no way to save her," Bramlage said.

Eight Belles was at the seven-eighths pole when she injured herself. "She suffered a condylar fracture in her left front, which opened the skin and was contaminated. On the right side, at least one sesamoid was broken. It was a catastrophic injury. It happened on the same stride right in front of the outrider."
