You knew this was coming - the much-anticipated 'Ask The Host' lifeline on the current new series of the original UK 'Millionaire' has come under media scrutiny after a contestant on last night's (May 8th) episode lost £31,000 after going with new host Jeremy Clarkson's hunch.
£64,000
In 2016, whom did Boris Johnson succeed as foreign secretary?
A) Liam Fox B) Philip Hammond
C) Kenneth Clarke D) William Hague
Ask The Host: Clarkson rules out Hammond, stuck between Fox and Hague, calls it an 'inkling'.
Phone A Friend: Husband says Hammond, but isn't sure.
'Final Answer': D) William Hague
Correct Answer:
She used both Ask The Host and Phone A Friend (her husband), but she went with a different answer based on Jeremy's 'I don't think it's Hammond'. Worse still, she had set her now-movable second safety net on that question, meaning £32,000 was no longer the safe haven, hence the huge penalty drop to £1,000.
Clarkson admitted during the Phone A Friend call, 'It's not gone terribly well for everybody, this (new lifeline)...I've been useless to her.'
BBC News has an article on the new lifeline, discussing its current track record, which is, to be kind, underwhelming at this early stage.
