Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on President Trump congratulating Vladimir Putin on his “election” victory:
“An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections. And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country's future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin's regime."

Give the man a break. He was only following orders. --Bob

Empty words from a senator who didn't have any problems supporting Hoodwink Martindale in 2016 just so that he could win his own re-election campaign.

You miss the whole point, Fireball. Condemnation from his own party is more significant than from the Democrats who opposed him from day one. (See the topic about Col. Peters.) And Sen. McCain’s words can sway many votes for impeachment if it comes to that, so they’re far from empty.

It appears that Trump and Putin also talked about non-disclosure agreements. Putin shared his rather permanent and apparently foolproof method of enforcing an NDA.

McCain has no pull within the Republican electorate. Only the Democrats like him.

News flash for the left. I am letting you in on a secret.
McCain is the epitome of the swamp on the republican side. His influence is mainly in Washington and the MSM. I can't speak for everybody, but for me, what he says or does has no influence on me. If anything, I consider him a negative bellwether. If he is noisy about something, I pretty much assume I am against what he wants.
I think there's a lot of people on the right that feel the same way.

If by swamp, you mean meritorious military service like McCain, Robert Mueller, and Ralph Peters have, unlike Cadet Bonespurs, I guess they are part of the swamp.

Gee, flock, I couldn't have said that about you any better.
So I take it you think congratulating Vladimir Putin on winning a rigged election while he is poisoning his opposition is a good idea.

Yes, of course. Now go run along and play with BJ.

When Obama congratulated Putin back in 2012, I think it was, that was good statesmanship, right? Asking for a friend.

Obama didn't congratulate Putin directly after a poisoning incident or after Russian documented interference in a U.S. election.
Statesmanship is knowing the right time and place to say something.

And when it comes to impeachment, that's exactly where his influence will be needed. Unfortunately, given his diagnosis, I doubt he'll still be with us when that time comes around.
I can't say I've ever been a fan of Senator McCain. But I do think that, unlike most of today's Republican Party, he's willing to consider the possibility that what's good for the party might not be good for the country, and (more importantly) to act on that belief. I'll never forget the time, late in the 2008 campaign, that Senator McCain publicly defended his rival against an unfounded attack. It's hard for me to imagine many current Republican office-holders doing so. --Bob
