2018 Oscar Predictions

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Sun Mar 04, 2018 12:37 pm

It's time once again for me to guess who will take home a small naked golden guy... and time once again to show how bad I am at predicting Hollywood. I think this year will be different, though. This year's Oscars feels as though it could be the most predictable Oscars ever. I am almost 100% sure that I can pin down all of this year's eight major winners... which probably means I will get only three correct.

Anyway, here are my picks on the top eight awards:

Best Adapted Screenplay -- Call Me by Your Name
Best Original Screenplay -- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Supporting Actor -- Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Supporting Actress -- *ugh!* Alison Janney, I, Tonya (I've mentioned many times before on the Bored how much I despise Alison Janney. I would really rather Laurie Metcalf win as I have thoroughly enjoyed her acting over the years. But since this is about who will win rather than who should win, I've reluctantly picked Janney.)
Best Actor -- Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Best Actress -- Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Director -- Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Best Picture -- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

I agree with all eight of your predictions. It's cursed now, for sure.

I think The Shape Of Water wins Best Pic, other wise I'd go along with your picks...although I do think that Metcalf has an outside shot at getting the nod over Janney.

Just can't understand the love people have for Call Me By Your Name, though. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. And I wish that The Big Sick had been shown a little more love than just an Original Screenplay nod. I really liked that movie.

I posted this on Facebook..

I've seen all of them. I'm not much of a film expert so my rankings are more from a layman's perspective...solely on what I liked/was entertained by. My favorite was Three Billboards. #2 was The Post, #3 Get Out (Was surprised at how much I liked it..people made it sound like it would be a Freddy Kruger horror movie or something, it was a psychological thriller to me). Then it gets muddy. #4 Darkest Hour..Oldman was great, and the story more engaging then I had anticipated. #5 The Shape Of Water. I liked it fine, but it was a movie I ADMIRED more than liked..beautifully done in all aspects but I didn't feel as touched emotionally as many many others did. #6 Dunkirk..again, I liked it well enough, but I thought going in I would love it..I didn't LOVE it. #7 Lady Bird. Some great performances, but nothing much happens. #8 Phantom Thread, See #7. #9 (by a mile) Call Me By Your Name. This bored me to tears. I need more than pretty scenery. This was in "watching paint dry" territory for me. Anyway, I expect The Shape Of Water to win. I wouldn't be upset by that, because it IS a beautifully crafted movie.

I agree with T Bone.

I’m ready to make my predictions now. Anyone interested? —Bob
