AYSTAFG about the Kentucky Derby?

I'm sending $10 to Loovle (that's how my brother says it's pronounced) and want my messenger to plunk it down on the winner -- not the favorite, the favorite never wins.
Who will be the winner? All opinions welcome.

No idea. I'll copy off of Nathan's answer.

Don't know if he will win but I was impressed with Colonel John at the Santa Anita Derby and it appears he has had no problem with the transition from "fake" dirt to the real thing. He seems to be the big favorite at the moment.
A lot of buzz about Big Brown of course and some talk about a big underdog, Cowboy Cal.

If you want to avoid the favorite, stay away from Colonel John, who seems to be beloved by a variety of racing writers.
I looked up the entire field of names to see if any of the horses qualified for overwhelming support under the Mother Murphy Method of picking horses. That involves looking for an entry that contains the name of or a reference to any dance or dancer. None of the 20 Derby entries qualifies this year for a sure-fire lock. One horse does seem to have a peripheral connection, however, so I would put my own money on. . .
Denis of Cork.

I had no idea that he was an Oklahoma horse. "The method" goes only by the names, so I save a lot of time by not having to look up facts and previous finishes. I paid more attention to that sort of thing a few years back, when Wayne Lucas (a big name among trainers) had a breeding/training farm about two miles from me. I would drive Tigger by the fence every spring, as she loved to watch the new colts.

I think it will be the one who loves his jockey the most.

How could you not put money on Cowboy Cal?

You need to go to rehab.
I have been getting into some interesting conversations with people when I tell them this. I think I might need to let people in on our household joke that started last year when I was in rehab with my m-i-l.
Everybody needs rehab.

I meant this type of horse. I think that black horses are pretty.

Maybe the dark horse will win.

Thanks very much to everybody for the dos centavoses!
Cowboy Cal it is, although I flinched a bit. Put the two of them together and you're way too close to a certain unnamed evil football team for me, but the western flair of the Cowboy part won the day.

Well, after yesterday's "pill pull" for post position, Big Brown has been installed as the early favorite at 3-1 even though he will be starting from the 20th position. (For those in the know, this is the last of the regular starting gate slots - any more than 20 and there's an auxiliary gate. No horse has won coming from the auxiliary gate.) Colonel John is next at 4-1 and Pyro is 6-1. The rest of the field is no better than 15-1. There will be one filly running in the race, Eight Belles; she was scheduled for the Kentucky Oaks (a race second only to the Derby around here, and exclusively for fillies) but drew a terrible position. Her owner had said that if that happened, he'd scratch her from the Oaks and run her in the Derby (for which she was also entered).

Funny thing, I couldn't get in the race this year. Prolly because I been dead longer than the horses in the Derby have been alive.
Oh well, when the race fans start complaining about the quality of one year's field, that's when I'll make my comeback.

I was referring the MM, of course. Surely he won't let a little something like rigormortis stop his from running in the Derby....
And if we can get a group of BB's to flog him down the track, he'll be a cinch to win!

Nah, I liked the fillies and this stuff called 'beer' too much to run under that handle.

No, no, no, the one with the curly tail!
Years ago, my folks went to the local track with a group of friends. The guys were miffed when the womenfolk won more money than they did by betting on, among other similar criteria, the horse with the curliest tail.
