I had read that Donny was going to wait until January to sign the new tax bill to avoid triggering automatic PAYGO cuts in popular programs such as Medicare. Now I see that he signed the bill today. Was this handled in the continuing resolution or are cuts in these programs imminent? --Bob

Does this have anything to do with the 700 million moved around for the ACA during Obama's admin?

No. For starters one of the issues is 25 billion in immediate cuts to Medicare. Other cuts would be even more drastic. --Bob

Okay. I'll wait to see what happens because I don't trust your factoid history. Nothing personal, well, maybe.

It was all over the news. Donny was originally going to wait until after January 1 to sign the bill to avoid triggering PAYGO cuts in 2018. The news is now reporting that he signed it today but I haven't found anything explaining either that PAYGO was waived (presumably in the continuing resolution that kept the government open for three weeks) or that Donny's signature on the bill triggered it, so I don't know what's going on.
Don't rely on me. Look it up yourself. --Bob

Doesn't look like much will change based on what I read.

Because the continuing resolution waived PAYGO? My concern is that all of the news stories I located on this issue were written yesterday, before anyone knew that Donny was signing the bill today instead of waiting until next year. --Bob

I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying I can't find
anything on the Internet discussing the issue in light of Donny's decision to sign the bill today instead of waiting until January. I suspect that silence means that the continuing resolution waived PAYGO, but I think an awful lot of people on Medicare would like to know that for sure.
So what I'm asking is whether you were able to find something current on the issue that I haven't been able to find yet. --Bob

According to the CBO, if the tax bill is signed into law in 2017, a $25 billion offsetting cut to Medicare in 2018 would result. The rest of the $150 billion in cuts would come from things like border security and farm subsidies.

Here's the text of the continuing resolution. The last section of the bill waived PAYGO. --Bob
