Yet another guy that most of us probably would have gotten wrong in a game of Dead or Alive. The author and reporter who became (in)famous for faking Howard Hughes's autobiography passed away on Tuesday at age 87.

I've read a couple of his novels (they're often available free on Amazon). His legal thriller, Trial, was very good. I also read one of his spy thrillers that was only so-so.

If you can, try to see Orson Welles movie 'F for Fake'. It's focus is on Elmyr the art forger but includes quite a bit of Irving as well who had published his own book on the art forger prior to his own famous try at 'art' (a quote from the movie: Orson Welles: What we professional liars hope to serve is truth. I'm afraid the pompous word for that is "art".).

You should also read The Hoax, Irving's account of his faking Howard Hughes's autobiography.
I had an email friendship with Irving about ten years ago. He optioned to me the film rights to one of his books for $1 with 10% of my payment if I sold it. I didn't.
