Browns QB Deshaun Watson settles all but four of 24 lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has reached a confidential settlement with all but four of the 24 women who sued him and accused him of sexual misconduct during massage sessions in 2020 and early 2021, the women’s attorney said Tuesday.

The settlements end the women’s litigation against him nearly 15 months after most were filed in 2021.

“Today I announce that all cases against Deshaun Watson, with the exception of four, have settled,” plaintiffs attorney Tony Buzbee said in a statement. “We are working through the paperwork related to those settlements. Once we have done so, those particular cases will be dismissed. The terms and amounts of the settlements are confidential. We won’t comment further on the settlements or those cases.”

At the behest of the team's owner, Daniel Snyder, the Commanders' legal team used private investigators to harass and intimidate witnesses, and created a 100-page dossier targeting victims, witnesses and journalists who had shared “credible public accusations of harassment” against the team, the congressional panel found.

Not to make light of this, but what was a 16-year-old girl doing at the Playboy Mansion?

Judy Huth, who is now 64, and a friend, Donna Samuelson, testified that in 1975 when they were teenagers they were invited by Mr. Cosby to join him at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles several days after meeting him on a film set in a park near their homes, where he was making a film, “Let’s Do It Again.”

According to them, he invited them to his tennis club days later, and then took them to a house where he was staying, where they played a game in which they had to drink beer every time they lost at billiards. He then asked them to follow him in their car to the Playboy Mansion.

“Are you girls ready for your surprise?” he said, according to Ms. Huth. “I had no clue what it could be,” Ms. Huth testified in court at the trial.

During the trial, her lawyers showed the jury a photograph of Ms. Huth standing with Mr. Cosby in the game room at the mansion where they played arcade games and pinball, they said. It was taken by Ms. Samuelson, Ms. Huth told the court, 15 minutes before, she said, Mr. Cosby molested her.

Mr. Cosby first put his hands on Ms. Samuelson’s shoulders, but she squirmed away, Ms. Samuelson said.

Ms. Huth asked to use a bathroom, she said, and when she came out Mr. Cosby was sitting on a bed in an adjoining bedroom.

“He patted the seat next to him,” she said. “I sat down. He tried to lean me back, he tried to kiss me, he tried to put his hands underneath my belly button where my high-waisted pants were.”

To deflect him, Ms. Huth said, she told Mr. Cosby she was on her period. But then, she said, “he pulled his sweats down, grabbed my hand, put it over his hand, closed it” and forced her to perform a sex act on him.

Mr. Cosby has denied that he sexually assaulted Ms. Huth, or any of the other women who have come forward in recent years to accuse him of sexual misconduct. In a video deposition taken in 2015, Mr. Cosby denied having any sexual contact with Ms. Huth, said that he didn’t know her and could not recall taking her to the Playboy Mansion.

Mr. Cosby’s lawyer noted that Ms. Huth’s recollection of when the encounter took place had changed: While she initially said it happened in 1974, when she was 15, she more recently concluded it was in 1975, when she was 16.

Mr. Cosby’s lawyers had argued that she had in fact been a willing visitor to the Playboy Mansion and noted that she did not flee after what she had described as a distressing encounter with Mr. Cosby but rather stayed on at the mansion for hours, swimming in the pool, ordering cocktails and mixing with celebrities.

“Boy, did Judy and Donna enjoy themselves,” a lawyer for Mr. Cosby, Jennifer Bonjean, said, referring to Ms. Huth and her friend.

Ms. Huth testified that she had been angry afterward and wanted to leave. Ms. Samuelson testified that she had persuaded Ms. Huth to stay to calm down. Ms. Huth agreed, she said, because Ms. Samuelson was the one who was driving.

But even though they stayed, Ms. Huth said she was preoccupied, only going through the motions and thinking about what had happened in the bedroom. The two friends said that they left the mansion at about midnight and agreed to keep what had happened secret.

According to the Wall Street Journal, WWE Chief Executive Vince McMahon paid $12 million to four women associated with the WWE to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct and infidelity. The women have all signed NDAs. In one case, the money has been paid over a 16-year period.

Vince McMahon has now retired as chairman and CEO of WWE in the wake of allegations that he paid millions of hush money to cover up allegations of sexual improprieties with multiple women. Not surprisingly, McMahon did not refer to his legal difficulties in his statement, saying only that due to his age (he's 76) "I feel it's time for me to retire." The WWE has not yet commented.

Deshaun Watson to Serve Six-Game Suspension, Per Ruling

Sue L. Robinson, the disciplinary officer appointed by the NFL and players association, ruled Deshaun Watson should be suspended for six games in 2022, according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report Monday’s news.

The proposed punishment comes after the league’s investigation into the sexual harassment and assault allegations levied against the Browns’ quarterback that lasted well over a year. More than two dozen women have detailed graphic accounts of sexual harassment and sexual assault that occurred during massage therapy sessions. The accounts range from Watson allegedly refusing to cover his genitals to the quarterback “touching [a plaintiff] with his penis and trying to force her to perform oral sex on him.”

Twenty-five women filed civil lawsuits against Watson starting in March 2021, and only one dropped her case due to privacy concerns in April ’21. Watson, then, agreed to settle 20 of the 24 civil lawsuits in June ’22. Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, announced the news, saying the terms and amounts agreed to are confidential and “we won’t comment further on the settlements or those cases.”

Watson and the NFL have now settled their dispute. Watson will serve an 11-game suspension (without pay) and pay an additional $5 million fine. He will also undergo a treatment program and submit to an evaluation by behavioral experts after completing the program.

George Foreman has been sued by two women who allege the boxer raped them when they were teenagers in the 1970s. They claim their fathers worked for Foreman and started grooming them years before the actual rapes occurred. Foreman is not actually named in the lawsuit but is listed as a John Doe defendant who just happened to be a heavyweight boxer who defeated Joe Frazier in 1973 for the world title. (The alleged assaults occurred in this general timeframe.) Foreman denies the charges and claims the women are trying to extort him.

It's much, much easier to replace a punter or placekicker (like the Giants did with Josh Brown a few years ago) than a starting, Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback.

Actor Jeff Garlin has left the TV series The Goldbergs following an HR investigation into numerous complaints of physical and verbal conduct on the set that made staffers uncomfortable. This was a "mutual decision" by both Garlin and the producers. It's unclear how the show will handle the absence of his character, the father on the titular family in the series. Both sides have been very vague about the nature of the allegations beyond claims that he would give staffers unwanted hugs, which he would excuse by saying he was just a big teddy bear (Garlin's physique does rather resemble a large teddy bear).

What To Know About The Allegations Against SNL Alum Horatio Sanz

A “look-back window,” part of a new New York City law rule, allows the alleged victim to bring this civil case against Sanz and NBC Universal in March 2023.

September 07, 2022

By: Brandon Gates

New details surrounding allegations against former Saturday Night Live star Horatio Sanz have emerged.

According to Rolling Stone, a civil lawsuit filed with the Supreme Court in August 2022 said Sanz publicly abused a 17-year-old at an SNL cast party in the early 2000s.

This lawsuit is an amendment to a complaint filed against Sanz and NBC in 2021. In the complaint, Jane Doe, who was 15 then, alleges she used an online message board and fan website she created to get the attention of SNL cast members in the early 2000s.

According to the complaint, as reported by Insider, the teen attended several tapings of the show as she was an aspiring cast member. She was also introduced to Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz, who allegedly repeatedly commented on her fan site and recognized her when she attended tapings.

Then the duo allegedly began to invite the teen to cast parties held at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

According to Variety, Jane Doe alleged Sanz groped her and attempted to digitally penetrate her at a party in May 2002. She was 17 years old.

The new suit claims Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels, and Tracy Morgan enabled the sexual assault allegedly committed by Sanz.

In the complaint, Jane Doe alleges that Fallon helped supply alcohol to her while she was a minor; Michaels met her and gave her advice about a writing career at one of the parties she attended underage, and Morgan rented out the space where Sanz allegedly groped her.

A lawyer for Sanz has denied the allegations saying the woman previously sought $7.5 million before filing her initial suit last year, Variety reported. Jane Doe alleges that 18 NBC Universal employees knew about Sanz’s alleged grooming and sexual misconduct.

In a statement to Variety, an NBCU spokesperson said, “employers owe no general duty to protect third-persons from the possibility of sexual abuse by their employees.”

“Regardless of Jane Doe’s changing narratives, NBC intends to renew its motion to dismiss,” the spokesperson continued in their statement.

A recent amendment to the New York City’s Gender Motivated Violence Act allows victims of gender-based violence to file civil lawsuits against abusers and enablers, Deadline explained. These changes provide a two-year “lookback window” for claims that would typically be unable to be tried because of the statute of limitations.

Jane Doe’s lawyers said her new claims will be made when the lookback window opens on March 1, 2023.

In news that has shocked a local Texas community, a local pastor has been arrested for raping a woman with disabilities who was previously under his care, according to the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities served the pastor, identified as 58-year-old Jorge Ariel Benavides, an arrest warrant on Sept. 12, charging him with “aggravated sexual assault of a special needs person.” Despite being arrested, Benavides was shortly released on bond on Sept. 15, the Laredo Morning Times reported.

While the arrest took place just this week, it is connected to an incident from March 2022. Webb County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a late sexual assault report at a home in the Santa Rita neighborhood in south Laredo on March 2. According to the arrest affidavit, the victim told a sheriff’s deputy that Benavides had sexually assaulted her on Feb. 1.
