Sadly, no. As the winds rotate counterclockwise around the storm's center, they push Gulf moisture onto areas to the east. So Houston got the heaviest rain (but not the strongest winds). Now Harvey's stopped moving, continuing to pummel Texas. Finally, weathermen predict, it'll turn around and pass right over Houston for a parting shot.Bob78164 wrote:I've seen from the storm track that it appears to have made landfall a decent distance south of Houston. We've had 18 inches so far and we're 25 miles north. No. Landfall was only part of this. The bands are neverending. Houston is under water and surrounding communities, 50 plus inches in the end. Houston is BAD.Bob78164 wrote:I've seen from the storm track that it appears to have made landfall a decent distance south of Houston. As I understand it, the Corps of Engineers is releasing the water because the dams are at risk for failure. According to a story I heard this morning they were rated as among the most likely to fail. Releasing the water is designed to prevent them from failing, which would be much worse than the planned release.BackInTex wrote:Beebs52 wrote:They're going to release two reservoir dams to stem worse flooding.
And what a cluster their ineptitude in explaining the situation caused.
It was simple. The reservoir is filling up and will back up into some neighborhoods and those folks should evacuate. Because the reservoirs are filling up, they will open the floodgates to relieve some of the pressure on the dams and help to lesson the flooding caused by the reservoirs filling up. But those neighborhoods will still flood, just not so bad.
Opening the floodgates will of course impact those downstream with additional flooding. Nothing can be done about that.
Instead, everyone thinks the neighborhoods that are flooding as a result of the reservoirs filling up are flooding because they are releasing the water. And folks miles upstream from the reservoir (even where I live) are in panic filling all the message boards up with questions about will they be flooded. "No, the water will flow downhill toward the gulf."

Just for that, you're going to get at least two feet more rain.BackInTex wrote:Congrats on your 5th consecutive "Asshole of the Year" award. You've earned it.Bob Juch wrote:As soon as Trump arrives on Tuesday and commands it to stop.BackInTex wrote:I'm sure it will stop soon.
