This is the first time that BOTH the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots have been over $300M at the same time. I strongly urge all my fellow Georgia BB's to do their patriotic duty and go out and buy as many tickets as you can. Those of you in other states should strongly considering driving or flying here to Georgia to buy your tickets. We have a ticket kiosk at the airport for your convenience.

An update...

nobody won either jackpot this week, which means you still have time to buy tickets for this weekend's drawing. The combined total is now over $700M.

It would have been funny had this occurred while both lotteries suspended operation in Illinois last month during our budget crisis. Even funnier considering all the summer construction on the bridges to Missouri...

That begs the question -- in a multi-state lottery like these, if you buy the ticket in one state but are a resident of another state, which one is on the hook for paying it out? Or is it spread out among the states collectively?

I don't know for sure but I think the jackpot amount is paid by the national fund and anything else is paid by the state which sold the ticket. Where you live only matters for the income tax you pay (along with the income for the state you purchased it in).

jackpot is national.

you must also claim ticket in state in which you bought the ticket, so if you buy out of state, even if you live in a state that does sell the tickets, you must go to the state in which you bought the ticket.

The grand prize jackpot is a multistate award. Smaller prizes are awarded by the state in which you bought the ticket. In Georgia and about a half dozen other states, residents can register with the lottery and buy tickets online, but you have to be a resident of the state in order to do that.

In a few days, I'll be in South Carolina, just two hours away from Savannah, Ga. If I had known about the Georgia lottery, I could have made plans to see the eclipse in Clayton, Blairsville, or Toccoa.

Buy a Mega Millions ticket and it's only $1 and the jackpot's bigger.

Well, some barbecue patron in Illinois won the MegaMillions jackpot (the fifth largest in the game's history). Maybe it was Lb.

The Powerball jackpot is still growing, though, with no winner Saturday. Up to $430 million on Wednesday.

Nobody won the Powerball jackpot again, and it will be over $500 million this Saturday. I have it on reliable authority that the winning ticket will be sold here in Georgia, so make your plans to come here to win the jackpot and stay for the eclipse (just don't go to the same part of north Georgia where Mrs. SSS and I will be going).

I went out last night to buy a ticket. My wife said "check the milk". I did. We needed some. So I went to the grocery store first. Bought the milk. Then stopped by the convenience store to buy a ticket. It was 9:06. 6 minutes too late to buy one. I know I would have won it if I had bought one. I'm so bummed out this morning.

Now that everyone has gotten that eclipse nonsense out of their systems, it's time to get back to what's important, namely the $700 million Powerball jackpot that I have on very reliable authority someone here in Georgia is going to win. It's not too late to drive or fly here to buy your tickets. Our kiosks at the airport will be open late for your convenience.

A 53-year-old hospital worker in Chicopee, MA, has claimed the prize, worth $758 million. This was the largest single-winner jackpot in US history, and, since she wasn't part of a pool, she gets to keep it all for herself (not counting taxes of course). She is now retired.
