Ben is a bad dude.
He's also a bad man.
Did Ben really think the guy wouldn't shoot Alex?
Will Desmond be able to protect Penny from Ben?

I don't understand "the rules" that Ben thought should have protected Alex and that apparently still protected Mr. Whatshisname, when Ben confronted him.

It was intriguing for Ben to say "You and I both know I can't do that." when Widmore asked if he was there to kill him.

If there's really only going to be six or so total survivors (leaving the possibility that Locke and possibly a couple more like Bernard and Rose may have chosen to stay behind and that Sawyer may have decided to vanish into the woodwork, then there's going to have to be a good bit more bloodletting in seasons to come to get the total numbers down.
The fact that Ben and Widmore were working under "rules" which Widmore broke may indicate that they are part of some larger power group that's interested in the island. Perhaps it's some consortium of which they are two factions.
It should be about time for Desmond to beat the daylights out of Ben. He's practically the only one on the island who hasn't done so yet.
And did we establish how Ben wound up in the middle of the desert in the first place? It seemed like one of those bizarre island-caused wormhole effects that seems to crop up every now and then.
And if Ben can control the smoke monster, why did he sic it on the plane crash survivors in the first couple of shows when he still had his guy Ethan there and he was presumably trying to determine which of them to "recruit."

As far as the outside world knows, there were only six survivors. The show hasn't said if all the others are really dead or just still stranded on the island, has it?

They sure made it look like a magic teleportation. And interesting how Ben seemed to know where he was, but wasn't sure when.

I took that to mean that Widmore is Ben's anchor in the Daniel Farraday time travel sense.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!
That'll be $10, please.

Quiet! Don't let that get around! If anyone I know thinks I actually made sense, they'll know this dumb-ass shtick is just an act!

As I recall Widmore has a tie to the island that goes all the way back to the ship the "Black Rock". It seems clear the producers/writers have created an entirely new sub storyline involving the two of them to which we are only now slowly being introduced.
But I suspect without knowing of course that the consortium and factions involved have a more mystical component than the more business like nature that those terms might imply.

Clearly it would seem that they are building to some sort of confrontation involving Ben and Desmond and perhaps it will figure in the conclusion of the show. What it will be remains to be seen. Sayid may end up getting tangled up in it as well. Indeed presumably many of the surviving characters will (Hence Charlies admonition to Hurley that he must "go back"). I would guess that Ben may finally get his "comeuppance".
Or not. Anything goes with this show and hopefully the conclusion will be satisfying and yet not too conventional, given all that has gone before.
Of course that is a tall order for any TV show, even this one.

We did not as far as I can tell. But it did seem to be an island related phenomenon. It may be one of those that never gets fully explained.

I rather suspect that may be because when the smoke monster was making his debut the current story line that involves Ben was not even a twinkle in the producers and writers eye. Maybe they hope we forgot about that. Maybe the monster was pissed because of the disruption to his "home" that led to the crash in the first place and was on an uncontrolled rampage. Maybe I could go on for some time and maybe we will never know. Yep, that seems most likely!
But Jacob would know...

That would explain why Ben couldn't kill Widmore, but it wouldn't explain why Ben felt that Widmore wouldn't kill his daughter, or why Widmore couldn't kill him.
A guy like Widmore is smart enough to know that Ben isn't a good sort to just let hanging around loose.
