Martin Landau, the all-purpose actor who showcased his versatility as a master of disguise on the Mission: Impossible TV series and as a broken-down Bela Lugosi in his Oscar-winning performance in Ed Wood, has died. He was 89.

Hmmm...he was one of those in my "I thought he was already..." mental files.

I thought he was awesome in Mission: Impossible and was thrilled when he won the Oscar for Ed Wood.

Unlike some older actors, he did solid work up until the end. One of his last movies was Remember opposite Christopher Plummer. It's a modern day Holocaust drama with the two of them as aging survivors in a nursing home, directed by Atom Egoyan, one of the better independent directors around. I highly recommend it if you have a chance to catch it on video.

Besides the aforementioned works, I thought he was in one of the better of the (original) Outer Limits episodes, "The Man Who Was Never Born."

An especially big fail since they walked away from Mission Impossible at the height of its popularity. It took 15 years for him to get his career back on track (when he got an Oscar nomination for Tucker). Her career never recovered.

Did they quit MI, or were they pushed (like Steven Hill was after season one)?

They quit due to a salary dispute.

I wouldn't say that Hill was pushed. He refused to tape on Friday evenings because of his Orthodox Judaism and the producers refused to accommodate his beliefs. At least that's how I understood it.
