Democrats Win Two Legislative Seats in Oklahoma

They don't have the publicity of the Congressional elections, but they count just the same. Tuesday night, Democrats picked up two Republican seats, one House and one Senate, in Oklahoma special elections. To be fair, both elections were held because the Republican incumbents resigned their seats under rather unsavory circumstances, so there may have been some personal backlash involved. But this is OKLAHOMA, about as red a state as you'll find. Trump won both those districts by about 20 points last year, and Romney won them over Obama in 2012 by over 30 points each. That makes a total of four state legislative seats the Democrats have taken away in special elections (versus no pickups by Republicans), and, in addition, Democrats are consistently outpolling, and in many cases substantially, their results from 2016 even when they haven't won.

My Kingdom is spreading! I feel like doing an inoffensive, politically correct Native American dance right now...

Well over 70 percent of each house is Republican, so there is a long way to go for the Dems.

This is akin to celebrating "moral" victories. Still lost in November. Still have Republicans overwhelmingly dominating state governments.

It's different. Historically, consistent overperformance in special elections is a leading indicator of general election results. Republicans should be worried whether they'll hold onto the House. --Bob

Yes, Georgia 6 was a 20 point Republican district for most of this century.

And Georgia 6 is not a seat the Democrats have to take (in fact they've probably got a better chance in the adjacent Georgia 7).

But California currently has 14 Republicans in Congress, New York 9, Illinois 7. A lot of those sets are a lot closer than Georgia 6 in terms of demographics.

Secretary Clinton won seven California districts (including 4 in Orange County and 1 in Los Angeles County) presently represented by Republicans. I expect to spend a fair amount of time next year working to flip one of California's districts and I'm very interested in a local organization known as Red-to-Blue. Before law school, I spent a few months paying the rent via door-to-door fundraising (sometimes known as community organizing). I hope to be able to spend some time in Orange County helping get-out-the-vote efforts. --Bob

Maybe Jon Ossoff will run there. He doesn't even have to move. He didn't live in the other district he ran in.
