Lyrically Speaking: It's full of stars

Saturn and Mars are well-positioned in the evening sky right now. Saturn is just to the left of Regulus, a reddish star at the bottom of a backwards question mark that makes up the head of Leo in the southern sky. Look for Mars in the west just below Castor and Pollux, the head stars of Gemini. The rings of Saturn are easy to see even with a small telescope, and when my son's Boy Scout troop went camping last weekend, one of the parents brought along an 11" telescope, and we were able to see four of Saturn's moons, too. The full moon was out as well, although it was overwhelmingly bright, even with a lunar filter on the eyepiece.

In case you haven't guessed by now, today's theme is astronomical references, either in the provided lyrics or in the song title.

1. I'm not talking about movin' in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around

2. In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels

3. Johnny made a record, went straight up to number one
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song

4. Remember when we did the moonshot
And Pony Trekker led the way
We'd move to the Canaveral moonstop
And everynaut would dance and sway

5. And if I ever lose my mouth
All my teeth north and south
Yes, if I ever lose my mouth
Ooh, I won't have to talk

6. I have my ship, and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left, and music is her name

7. There are stars
In the Southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight
And moss in the trees

8. Sun goes down on the silky day,
Quarter moon walking through the Milky Way
Oh, you and me, baby,
We could think of something to do

9. We get it on most every night
When that moon is big and bright
It's a supernatural delight

10. We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smiling bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern belles are hell at night

Bonus: What is the actual constellation name for the title of song #6?

Double Bonus: One half of the duo that sang song #1 is the brother of a member of another duo that had (marginally) more success. (Got all that?) Which member of the first duo (including last name) is it, and what was the name of his brother's band?

Final Bonus: What name does the singer of song #5 currently go by?

Ah, I remember the good old days when you could actually see the stars around here.....

In case you haven't guessed by now, today's theme is astronomical references, either in the provided lyrics or in the song title.

1. I'm not talking about movin' in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around
I'd Really love To See You Tonight - England Dan & John Ford Coley (Some mouthful like that...)

2. In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels

3. Johnny made a record, went straight up to number one
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song
Shooting Star - Bad Company

4. Remember when we did the moonshot
And Pony Trekker led the way
We'd move to the Canaveral moonstop
And everynaut would dance and sway

5. And if I ever lose my mouth
All my teeth north and south
Yes, if I ever lose my mouth
Ooh, I won't have to talk
Moon Shadow - Cat Stevens

6. I have my ship, and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left, and music is her name
Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash (Don't think they had Young for this one....)

7. There are stars
In the Southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight
And moss in the trees
Seven Bridges Road - Eagles (Boy do I hate this song, especially that annoying beginning....)

8. Sun goes down on the silky day,
Quarter moon walking through the Milky Way
Oh, you and me, baby,
We could think of something to do

9. We get it on most every night
When that moon is big and bright
It's a supernatural delight
Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest

10. We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smiling bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern belles are hell at night
Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck! (I almost put this one down for #9, and was really hoping it was #10....)

Bonus: What is the actual constellation name for the title of song #6? - I had no idea it had another name

Double Bonus: One half of the duo that sang song #1 is the brother of a member of another duo that had (marginally) more success. (Got all that?) Which member of the first duo (including last name) is it, and what was the name of his brother's band? - I've heard of this before, but I can't remember the brother's name. I'm going to guess the other duo is Seals & Croft....

Final Bonus: What name does the singer of song #5 currently go by? - Yousef Islam (Does spelling count?)

Crux. The four main stars are positioned almost perfectly at top, bottom, left, and right to form a small cross in the sky. Unfortunately, since I live halfway up the northern hemisphere, they are always below the horizon for me.

Yusuf Islam. (No, I didn't subtract points for spelling.) Two points were awarded to kroxquo for calling him "Ayatollah something". I wasn't aware of him reverting back to Cat Stevens, so if anybody thinks these points actually matter for anything (that's right -- these points are about as important as underwear is to Paris Hilton), post a link to the news event and I'll give you your 10 points.
