A 20 year anniversary

Today is the 20th anniversary of when I bought stock in a little company called Amazon.com.
My ROI is 67,015.33%!
My ROI is 67,015.33%!
Bored gurus may recall a conversation I had a few years back with BIT in which we debated the merits and value of Amazon as a company. He took the position that their quarterly profits weren't as high as they should be, while I noted the way the company was expanding into hitherto unknown realms for any retailer.Bob Juch wrote:Today is the 20th anniversary of when I bought stock in a little company called Amazon.com.

I bought it at $18 and a few cents per share. It split 2:1, 3:1 and 2.1 in the first couple of years so I have 12 times the number of shares. I remember our conversation. It was around 400 then.silverscreenselect wrote:Bored gurus may recall a conversation I had a few years back with BIT in which we debated the merits and value of Amazon as a company. I'm curious what the stock price was then and now.
Not until you sell it.Bob Juch wrote:Today is the 20th anniversary of when I bought stock in a little company called Amazon.com.

That's about a 38% annual return. Pretty good if you can keep that going for 20 years.Bob Juch wrote:I bought it at $18 and a few cents per share. He's giving you a hint, Bob. Now would probably be a good time to cash out. Well, not right now because it's 1:40 AM on a Saturday and the markets don't open again until Monday morning... but you know what I'm talking about. You can afford to quit at a 67,000% profit. Hell, last year, I sold all of the HP stock I bought while I worked for them many years ago after a net 40% profit and I was thrilled.Estonut wrote:Not until you sell it.Bob Juch wrote:Today is the 20th anniversary of when I bought stock in a little company called Amazon.com.

Wrong, as usual. All I meant was that ROI cannot be calculated until there is a return. There is no return until there is a sale.Pastor Fireball wrote:He's giving you a hint, Bob. Nope, I have a stop loss order in just in case, but I'm not planning on selling until I'm dead.Pastor Fireball wrote:He's giving you a hint, Bob. Now would probably be a good time to cash out.
