But he has referred to a United States Senator at a public gathering as "Pocahantas," which in my mind forfeits any claim to having his own name referred to with dignity. I won't use those other terms out of respect for the office, which is more than the current officeholder has, but I won't criticize those who do.
This is funny, particularly in this thread.
Sen. Warren grew up in Oklahoma, where I now live and know many Native Americans. The senator is better known around here as "Fauxcahontas" because real Native Americans hold their Indian ancestry with great pride and would not wish to insult the original Pocahontus. According to people who went to high school with her in Oklahoma City, she never claimed any native heritage at the time. She since has told a story about her grandmother noting her "high cheek bones" or somesuch, but she has produced no evidence -- no great grandparent listed on the Dawes Rolls, the official list of members of the Five Civilized Tribes, no old photograph of an ancestor with apparent native dress, jewelry or "appearance", no mention on a census for generations past, nor old family letters that mentioned a tribal connection or so much as having lived in a town with a high concentration of a native population. Her "proof", besides the grandmother remark, consists of having ticked check-boxes on forms that would provide her with some benefit starting in her college years or shortly thereafter.
My perception, in short, is that Elizabeth Warren is held in much lower esteem around here than she is in the nation at large, and that's not saying all that much. "Real" Oklahoma Indians are largely annoyed by her, probably not as much because she claims heritage that isn't her own, but that she has used it to gain access to organizations, publicity, and employment for her own personal gain -- possibly taking away some of those opportunities from a qualified person who can prove his or her Native American ancestry.
Come on, SSS. If you want to convince us that anybody is not a liar, why don't you start with an easier subject -- Hillary, maybe?
