More Geo Trouble Today
One contestant on today's show is a young beautiful American woman. I was pulling for her. As it happens she is also has Southeast Asian roots. And then she got a Southeast Asia geography question and it doesn't go well. Sort of like me getting a question on Scotland and muffing it.
Oh and you get a see another contestant walking with $2K

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I usually (98%) have no problem with a contestant missing an easy question either because they do not know or hotseatitis or whatever (muffing), it happens.themanintheseersuckersuit wrote:Spoiler

Spoiler
The geo question was easily googled. I put in "landlocked Southeast Asian country" and the answer was on the first hit. PAF's either need maps or computers. Looks like it wouldn't hurt for future potential contestants to brush up on their geography either!

This is a question from the Capcom game on my phone. Nice to know I'm studying while playing it.kayrharris wrote:Spoiler

Depending on how far removed she is from her Asian roots it isn't that surprising. The more "American" you become, the more of a geo nit-wit you become or so it seems. Youth, unless one is a Geography Bee nerd, tends to correspond to geo nit-witism as well. So "young" and "American", regardless of how attractive she may be, didn't bode well for her chances...

No, fortunately I don't...

I'm curious. Did she say that she had Southeast Asia heritage, but not state an ethnicity/nationality?

I don't listen to the chatter that close, she is obviously Asian in her features and her last name was Nguyen. She is as American as me.

Hank: (meeting Khan) So are you Chinese or Japanese?
Khan: No, we are Laotian.
Bill: The ocean? What ocean?
Khan: From Laos, stupid! It's a landlocked country in South East Asia between Vietnam and Thailand, population approximately 4.7 million!
Hank: (after a few seconds of silence) So are you Chinese or Japanese?
